Just how impressive is this feat. Derek Jeter has trekked towards 3500-3800 for most of his career but goes down again to the DL around 3310 hits.

Will we ever see 3500? 3700? 4,000? again?

I still think Jeter gets a couple dozen more this year and eventually get to 3500+

Ichiro might get to 3,000 and had over 1,000 in Japan, but Tuffy Rhodes was a star over there too.....but had Ichiro always been here he might be pushing near 4,000.

Miguel Cabrera is at 2,000 at a very young age but I'd be pretty shocked if he went too far past 3,000....but could push 3500

Arod, Griffey and Pujols looked to be 3500 guys for a long time. Roberto Alomar had the 3500 look until his early 30's.

To me.....4256 is getting more and more impressive. Good Luck Mr. Trout

Its funny you post this because to date I have 4,294 posts and to me it seems like a bunch. I was just thinking the other day that I have posted as many times as Rose has gotten a hit. Thats alotta hits and posts.

There were PEDs back then; just different ones. IMO, that "hit king" label becomes less impressive with each passing year.

Cabrera's body type probably doesn't give him a chance. But then again, Pete didn't exactly have the ideal body. He probably played through stuff that would debilitate some of these other guys, though.

Pete said himself that if he wouldn't have been manager, there is no way he would have started as much as he did, and he certainly wouldn't have been allowed to bat 2nd.

His last "good" year was 1981. By '84 he should have been finished. He came back to the Reds and it was like he was 10 years younger. It should have been his swan song.

Instead, he managed himself into the 2 hole for the next two seasons to the tune of:
1985: .264 avg .713 OPS
1986: .219 avg .586 OPS

24 years in the majors. Should have been 22. I just don't see anyone breaking his record.

Why should it have been 22? In his 22nd year he came back to the Reds and hit .365 in the last couple months....and had 4,097 hits, why in the world would anyone not want him back? .713 OPS batting 2nd....that wasn't a factor in 1985....he was going for the record and no one in the world cared the #2 hole guy was hitting .265

He was terrible in 1986, but he didn't play a lot and most 45 year olds are.

Pete's OPS + in 85 was 99. He was league average and was 3/4 for OPS +/OPS out of the 6 qualifiers for the 85 Reds. He also had a OBP of .395 which would look great in the two hole back then and today. Now the 2 HR and .319 slugging percentage were kind of sad for a first baseman.

In 85, perhaps the team would have been better served with Esasky at first and Davis or Redus getting more time in the OF but with a .395 OBP it is hard to argue Rose should not have gotten time.

What evidence do you have that suggests every generation had them?
