That's a good question, but it appears it won't (yet).

He began the year with 4 years and 9 days of service. The pension is divided into classes with each full year of service beginning a new class. So if/when those extra 14-20 days gets him to 5 years, it most certainly would help.

It looks like Miller has been outrighted seven different times in his career (presumably heading for No. 8). I wonder aloud what the record for most outright assignments by a major league player is.

We will likely see Corky in a Reds uniform during September so on the (hopefully only two out of every five) games that Ryan catches, Dusty can use Mes as a pinch hitter from the right side and have an emergency catcher.

I suppose it is possible to put Corky on a playoff roster for the same reason if you are going to remove a reliever or two from the 25 man for the playoffs. I mean, I wouldn't think Corky would play unless an injury or very long extra inning game happens, but if it means the Reds can freely use Mes as a pinch hitter a couple times in a series in key situations, that probably has more value than bringing a 6th outfielder who isn't as good as Mes at swinging the bat.

So, if the Reds drop a couple relievers from the 25 man for the playoff roster, I wouldn't mind seeing Corky (for the ability to pinch hit Mes) and Billy Hamilton (for the ability to pinch run late in a close game). Hopefully neither sees a playoff AB though.

Bronson is the least likely to "need" Hanigan.

I'd have Hanigan catch Bailey every start and 1/2 of Bronson's.....giving Meso 7 starts every 10 games.

I don't think it's about "need". I think it's that Bronson "wants" Hanigan behind the plate.

Basically that's my definition of "need" for this.

I bet every single pitcher on the staff wants Hanigan to be receiving their pitches. He calls and good game and is one of the best receivers behind the dish.

Broxton back, Hanigan back and Ludwick back by this weekend. Hopefully Cueto and Marshall come back at some point this year, but I fear they are out until 2014.

This team has some dead weight on the 40 man roster, Freeman, Villarreal, Corky, Izturis, etc. We need some guys to step up this offseason and make the jump.

Did Hanigan get a rehab before returning? I show him with 9 minor league plate appearances and those were in early May. Maybe the Reds felt they did not have the luxury of a rehab with catching so thin and Corky banged up.
