    Re: Stephenson promoted to Pensacola

Not that they would rush him like Florida did, but the (huge) success of Jose Fernandez this year in jumping from A to the majors maybe might help other organizations feel comfortable moving premier pitching talents a little quicker. I am certainly surprised they moved him to AA so quickly, not that he isn't ready, more so that hasn't been my perception of how quickly the Red generally move pitchers (having said that, they moved Cingrani fairly aggressively too is my recall...).

We would not have had the 2008 recession if the Reds had drafted Wacha instead of Travieso.

Not really. Lets not forget how good Bailey was.

In his age 20 season Bailey made 13 starts in AA and had a 1.59 ERA

Stephenson has yet to make his first start in AA.

Funny to think, too, how completely different a pitcher he was at that time, compared to his current self.

    Walt on the promotion:

    http://cincinnati.com/blogs/reds/201...oster-expands/

STEPHENSON PROMOTED: Right-hander Robert Stephenson was promoted from high A Bakersfield to Double-A Pensacola. Stephenson, 20, was the club’s top pick in 2011 draft.

“We wanted to fast track him this year,” Jocketty said. “We would have been there sooner if he hadn’t had a little setback.

Stephenson began the year at low A Dayton. He went 5-3 with a 2.57 ERA there. He was 2-2 with a 3.05 ERA for Bakersfield. He went six shutout innings in his last start for the Blaze and allowed one hit. He struck out nine and walked one.

Overall, he’s thrown 97 2/3 innings and allowed 75 hits, 22 walks and struck out 118.

Jocketty has seen Stephenson pitch twice this year.

    “Very impressive,” he said.

I am not saying I want the Reds to trade Stephenson at all, but if he finishes at AA strong I wonder what type of return he could fetch.

Repeat: I do not want the Reds to trade Robert Stephenson.

Yes...but Stephenson's numbers leading up to AA have been better. Loving the whip, k/9, and k/bb for him.

    Bailey was stellar as well.

I don't think it's insane for the Reds to wonder as well. I have little doubt other teams will ask about him at some point, and my guess is the Reds won't listen for anything short of a Brinks Truck type of return.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

Would you do Stephenson for Wil Myers straight up?

Would be difficult to say no to that.

I might want someone a little more proven than Myers. He is good, but we know all too well about the sophomore slump.

The reason I would give Stephenson up at this point is because his trade value is high and he might not turn out the way people are seeing him. Look at Hamilton and Corcino after moving to AAA. They lost value after being shell shocked in Louisville.

Stephenson is better at age 20 than Bailey was. The stuff is better, the control is better. Bailey certainly pitched very well in AA, which is where I am sure some will give him the edge, but he was walking nearly 4 batters per 9 innings in AA that season. While we certainly won't get a chance to see Stephenson get nearly as many innings, I just can't fathom him walking that many hitters. He is in the zone too much.

Anyone who has ever seen Stephenson pitch wants nothing to do with the idea of trading him away for someone not named Mike Trout or Bryce Harper.

Corcino and Hamilton are nothing like Stephenson.

    I wouldn't even consider it.

That is what I way saying. I would want someone a little more proven than Myers. A young, reliable star. I would have mentioned Trout or Harper, but I figured they are nearly untouchable.

I agree that Stephenson is nothing like Corcino and Hamilton, but I am saying that he could potentially slow down or dip in performance. I was simply using Corcino and Hamilton as examples of guys dipping in performance, of course it would take a lot for Stephenson to dip that low.
