Mourinho will never play those kids.

    Re: 2013 EPL Thread

Just watched ESPN's 30 for 30 on Hillsborough. I've read about the tragedy before, but this was the first time I'd actually heard people who had been there talk about their experiences. Very sad and tragic. But the worst part has to be the cover up by police leadership and to some degree the coroner that tried to shift the blame to the victims.

The crazy thing is, I was 18 when Hillsborough happened, the same age as many who died. I think that if I had been a Liverpool fan in England at that stage in my life, I would have tried to get tickets to the game and would have wanted to be behind the goal where all the action was.

So we're about the same age. I was 20 when it happened. I hadn't started following the league yet, but I remember it making news here and the story was pretty much the "official" version. All these years later and a lot of Americans I know still caution me about wanting to attend a match in England because it's too dangerous. Don't I know I could get killed in a drunken crowd? It wasn't until years later that I became a fan that I learned the truth. It really is a sad affair.

Not that a single person will find this surprising by now, but Moyes has been officially sacked. Ryan Giggs is the interim manager.

International football isn't fair. It's dominated by teams with deep pockets and access to big revenue streams. It favors class stratification within the leagues.

The irony of that is most of Europe is socialist while their biggest and favorite sport is based on feudal lords ruling over a bunch of paupers.

Even Greg Schiano got 2 years from the Glazers.

Yep. The few Man U fans I know personally have never liked the Glazers (admittedly, there is some overlap with Tampa Bay Bucs fanhood), but with Sir Alex as the central figure, they could pretend the Glazers didn't exist. No such luck going forward.

While the cover up is disgusting and the ineptitude of the people running the event is unquestionable, there is still the uncomfortable fact that you had a crowd of people who piled into a stadium and, when they ran into a wall of people, started pushing. I've been in crowds where that's happened. It's scary and there's a lot of idiots in the back making it happen. How drunk were they? I don't know, but football fans aren't known their sobriety. As horribly planned as the event was and even with all the tragic decisions that were made leading up to the crush (none of which were the fans' fault), this doesn't happen with an opera crowd.

So I absolutely think Liverpool fans and the families of the victims (because those people most certainly were victims), deserve the truth and that the authorities should be held accountable, most specifically for the cover up. Yet Liverpool fans have not admitted that the pile of Liverpool fans pushing from the back like that had no consequences also led directly to those tragic deaths.

With the 0-0 draw against Atletico Madrid in-hand and the 2nd leg at the Bridge next week, I fully expect a C- minus effort from the Blues against Liverpool this weekend.

Might as well start polishing up the trophy for display at Anfield.

What is bigger, a Champions League Title or a EPL Title? Just curious because I don't know.

Champions League and it's not that close. League titles are great, but from its inception the Champions League has been the showcase of the immortals. Sir Alex won more trophies than he can count, but the two big ones were the CL victories. The chase for La Decima is all-consuming in Madrid. Pep Guardiola just led Bayern to a Bundesliga title in record time and the general consensus that if he doesn't retain the CL, then this season will be mild disappointment. It's the biggest prize in club football (followed by the Copa Libertadores).

The CL title is also a much bigger deal to the players -- many (if not most) of whom aren't from England and didn't grow up dreaming of winning a PL title.

That's probably true. I do think the league matters more to fans though. There is an element of randomness to the Champions League that doesn't exist in the Leage as much. Both are a big deal though. It is a sort of a 1a/1b situation.

I think Mourinho's just being pragmatic here. Even if they win at Liverpool, they're still two points behind with two games to play and the win benefits City more than themselves. Meanwhile, a win against Atletico and they have nearly a month to get healthy for the Champions League final. If his roster is such that he can only fire one good shot in the next week, seems like the CL is the place to aim.
