Seems to be a double standard here.
Pete has a gambling problem so him hanging out in casinos is a bad idea.

I go to casinos but I do not have gambling problem so that is not a bad idea.

The casinos are filled with people with gambling problems, that's pretty much why they exist.

and if those people had the past history Pete has had with MLB and gambling, I doubt MLB would let them back in either.

I really believe that's what will happen. Pete has too many enemies out there don't want to see him get the glory of finally being inducted to the HOF. They also don't want to see him profit by it. I would say within 5 to 10 years after his death you will see Pete go into the HOF but not until then.

Baseball does not have to allow Pete in the HOF. He isn't going in front of a judge who can say yes or now. Pete's path to the HOF is through baseball and Selig. If he truly wants in he shouldn't make a mockery of the situation. He shouldn't associate himself with casino's. He is doing nothing illegal, but his actions aren't helping the situation.

I see the exact opposite thing. Pete embarrasses this city often yet Reds fans still accept him with open arms.

Mets, Yankees and Brewers all have sponsorship deals with casinos.

If casinos are so bad, then MLB should have nothing to do with them at all.

It just strikes me as hypocrisy that MLB (which is the owners and the commissioner that works on their behalf, after all) should be creating revenue streams from casinos while telling their ex-ballplayers (Rose, Mantle, Mays) that they can have nothing to do with a casino.

I realize that casino gambling has become very socially acceptable. I've been a couple of times, and I don't get it- I work too hard for my money to throw it away, but for some it's great entertainment and I understand.

Casinos are not bad and I doubt MLB thinks they are as long as their employees are not frequenting them. Alcohol isn't bad either and I doubt MLB thinks it is either. However when a player is told to reconfigure his life due to a particular vice which in Rose's case is gambling and yet he still hangs out in casinos, then MLB is going to have a problem with that. If MLB bans a manager from MLB for alcohol abuse and MLB tells him to reconfigurre his life if he wants back in but that manager still hangs out in bars then MLB is going to have a problem with it. Neither casinos or bars are bad IMO, just when you have addicts like Rose who are told to stay away from them because of their past sins and they continue to ignore the order then they will continue to be on the outside looking in.

The Mets Yankees and Brewers are not banned from the game for associating with gamblers. The Mets, Yankees, and Brewers are not asking for reinstatement and trying to demonstrate to baseball they've changed their ways.

Is it a double standard that baseball has commercial relationships with casinos yet don't allow their players to gamble in them? Sure. But there's an obvious reason for it.

And further, the honus is on Pete. He is asking to have his sentence reduced. So if baseball tells him to stop hanging around a casino, he doesn't get to decide whether or not it's fair, he gets to decide if it's worth it to him to no longer associate himself with gambling.

Instead I think he's made the calculated decision that he's worth more as a pariah than he would as another HOF.

If your wife kicks you out of the house because you were gambling too much and losing the family's money do you think it would be a good idea to continue to frequent casino's if you wanted to get back in her good graces?

Gambling can be a fun experience and in most places is perfectly legal. That doesn't mean its a good idea to frequent if its the reason you lost your job or lost money for your mortgage payment.

I know Pete agreed to a lifetime ban, but there should be a process to get it reversed. Look at guys in jail, they commit a crime and with good behaivor, they get paroled and get out early.

Pete did take a long time to finally admit and fess up, but lately he has been pretty good. Maybe the process starts with him doing community work or mentoring. I have watched 'Hits and Mrs' and '4192' and other forms of media with him and he is a very good story teller. He could mentor young prospects. He knows so many stories involving teammates, coaches, opponents, legends, and his family that could inspire and guide them to want to work hard and want to be clean.

Have Pete do that for a while and call it a limited reinstatement. If he does it well and doesn't screw up, then he could progress further to full reinstatement.

If my wife made money from casinos in some way, but kicked me out of the house for gambling, I would find it a bit hypocritical of her.

Look, I understand Rose's problem. I understand what MLB asked of him. But to see MLB now embrace gambling because it can make more money doesn't seem quite right to me.

Seems as if most people don't see a problem with it, so I'll stop now.

Yes, Rose bet on baseball for his team to win.

Did anyone prove he took money to throw a game?

To me, that's the question to ask. The baseball rule is intended to prevent outside influences from impacting the outcomes of games. Were a teams wins and losses affected by Rose's actions?

Yes, he has a toxic personality and is not likeable. Yes, he agreed to the ban. Yes, Had he been a little smarter he would have hired a better attorney and probably negotiated a better deal.

Does Rose have any other reasonable skills where he could earn a salary without associating himself with Casinos? A large number of players use memorabilia signings as a partial income to pay the bills as they get older. In Rose's day very few major league players attended college. I doubt he has the ability to earn a lot on the outside of the game. Signing balls and bats may be the best way to keep the bills paid...and I would rather having him support himself rather than us having to support him through our taxes.

In spite of all of the arguments...I keep looking at 4256 hits (free of steroids or PEDS). He didn't cheat the game. Also, when I look at the top 500 hits list of major leaguers past and present, it does not look like anyone will pass him in my lifetime or beyond. In today's game, this may turn out to be the most imposing record of them all to break.

From my POV, I will recognize the Hall of Fame as legitimate when Pete Rose is inducted. I hope it happens during his lifetime or not at all. I just can't get into the idea that the guy should be punished until and beyond death.

Pete did embarrass this city, but he has paid dearly for that. With the way his career went he should be a lifetime millionaire who should never have to work a day again if he doesn't want to....the hit king, the guy who has the ultimate record in baseball that will never be broken gets up in the morning and goes to work just like all of you and me....he has spent 20 years struggling to make ends meat when he could've been a millionaire doing something with the game....so yes he embarrassed this city, but he also has made this city proud after his banishment because he showed that he didn't fold up shop and quit at life like he could have and become a drunk living off the tax payers like so many others do each and every day.....Pete makes this city proud by trying to copy the cities workmanlike attitude and push through his crappy life and keep plugging along each and every day...sometimes working 7 days a week, 12 hour days.....hell, 99% of us here at RZ has never done that and if we have its never done for more than a week or two....if we worked like that we wouldn't be on RZ!!! I understand he wasn't sweating in out in the coal mines but he still was working a regular job making crap pay just so he could get by from week to week

Yes he turned his back on cincy and shamed us by lying about his gambling....but he has made amends in my book. Not to mention he has to get online and buy a ticket to a Reds game in the same way you and I go about it. He's not embarrassed this city, I wish more people had his workmanlike attitude and refused to sit outside the stadium asking me for change when they could be working an actual job, any job.

Was he a role model back then? Heck no.....is he a role model now? I am not sure but it's obvious he is not the same guy and that is what's important.
