Heck, in the Big 10, both Purdue and Illinois have been competent programs. Should they be kicked out because they currently suck?
I'm not suggesting anyone get kicked out. The SEC has high standards for its football and UT and UK haven't met them

Wow buckeye fan lecturing anyone on elitist attitudes.

Fact is that Tennessee hasn't been competitive by SEC standards for half a decade. That's inarguable.

The Vols won't make a bowl appearance for the third straight season. That's not even competitive by lowly Big 10 standards.

I don't apologize for that where the SEC is concerned.

Can't argue with any of that. UT was really screwed by the Lane Kiffin departure. The timing of it left them with few choices to replace him. It also affected recruiting bigtime. In addition Tyler Bray suffered from dillusions of grandeur and opted to leave school early. They need to reload and they're on track to do exactly that with a recruiting class that's currently ranked 2nd only to Alabama. We're going to see a lot of freshmen playing next year

One reason their class is ranked so high is that they've got 31 commitments. It's misleading.

They're going to have several of their 4 stars poached and they'll also be leap frogged as other programs add players to round out classes. Jones keeps talking about building a brick at a time. Franklin built a winner season 1.

The Vols are also staring at the potential for NCAA issues. The Vols are working on a decade of irrelevance and could be staring at another decade of mediocrity.

UK went to five straight bowl games before Joker Phillips derailed the train. Mark Stoops is recruiting at a level not seen before at UK. Don't count them as dead yet.

Not only that -- and the same could be stated for UT -- new systems on both sides of the ball were implemented without the benefit, for the most part, of players specifically recruited to play in the new systems.

Stoops and Jones were already behind the eight-ball in that regard.

Well, I think you'll agree, they need a lot of bodies. Unlike the good teams, they need 31 guys. Is it misleading? Well Alabama has 16 recruits ranked as 4 and 5 star athletes. UT also has 16. Auburn has 7. 3 Star athletes? Bama has 6, UT has 15 and Auburn has 10 according to Scout.com. So far, so good for UT. In fact they couldn't hope to be in a better position at this point

I'm pretty sure you can do the math it takes to calculate team rankings. Tennesee currently has 33 commits listed on the 247sports composite team ranking.

If teams are ranked by the average recruit rating rather than a total of recruit points, the Vols class would drop to the tenth best. While that's still good, it also assumes that the Vols don't lose any commitments which seems like an unrealistic assumption given their top commitments are largely still be recruited by other programs.

The promise of early playing time only goes so far.

Just because Tennessee ought to be able to become relevant again doesn't mean that they automatically will or that they will quickly. They have a shocking lack of SEC calibre athleticism. That's not a recipe for a rapid turnaround.

There's no guarantee about recruiting anymore than there's a guarantee that a Peyton led team will win when ahead 24-0 at halftime. Sure we can play Debbie Downer and show how this class could crumble but why? Personally I'd like to see a 4 or 5 star QB commit to UT as none of those 33 guys are QBs right now, but I have nothing to complain about at this point.

It's not being a debbie downer or deconstructing a signing class to point out that the Vols current list of commitments isn't actually representative of the second best in the nation-at has as much to do with bodies as it has to due with quality and by arguing it's the second best in america, you're comparing it to programs that clearly have better average quality but 16 fewer current commitments.

The point is that it's misleading.
