Pete Rose: "I Picked the Wrong Vice"

"You have to understand, I don’t call these guys to do shows, they call me. And of course with all this steroid talk and the 12 guys being suspended and A-Rod appealing, they want my input because I’m suspended for life. Hey, everything is a different case. I made mistakes. I can’t whine about it. I’m the one that messed up and I’m paying the consequences. However, if I am given a second chance, I won’t need a third chance. And to be honest with you, I picked the wrong vice. I should have picked alcohol. I should have picked drugs or I should have picked up beating up my wife or girlfriend because if you do those three, you get a second chance. They haven’t given too many gamblers second chances in the world of baseball."

And I'm glad they don't. It is the most dangerous thing that can be done in MLB. And all those involved know the punishment.

I wish he'd just disappear from the public eye. But then again, he needed to do that a long time ago.

What a joke this guy is. I can't believe anyone still feels sympathy for him as a person. Every time he opens his mouth he embarasses himself.

And besides, how do we know he has never battered a woman? I'm not saying he is Cesar Cedeno, but he also told us for many years that he never gambled on baseball. He also insists that he never gambled as a player, contrary to credible evidence otherwise (page 14, ironically).

Pete can't win. Beat him up when he lies. Beat him up when he's honest.

Look, I love Pete as much as the next guy, I grew up on the west side of town worshiping the guy. He taught me a hard lesson about putting athletes on a pedestal. How can you tell he's being honest? His one vice was gambling? There are women all over the west side of town who tell of a different vice to this day. What about all those greenies Pete and everybody else he played with took over the years, the stuff was laying out in bowls in the locker room?

Pete should just be quiet, and as EMAW said, bide his time and he might get in.

Rose saying this just is trying to make himself look better. In fact, it already does make Pete look better, he doesn't need to say something crass to drive it home.

You really can't tell. I just accept that we're all flawed as human beings. He's had more issues than most, but I don't think he's intentionally tried to hurt people. Just boneheaded, bad decisions that have mostly hurt himself, and foolish pride that was too strong to admit it early on. I know people like that in my family. I'm not gonna beat 'em up for all eternity. Know what I mean?

Sure he can win. When he can honestly just be sorry for what he did without whining or making excuses or acting like he's some sort of victim, then he'll win.

He is a victim for being left out of the HoF. For the lifetime ban from MLB, that's a different matter. I think that should stay in place.

If he would be quiet for a while and wait till Selig leaves office he would get in the HOF, Bonds is doing the smart thing, Pete needs to follow his lead and I BET he would get in

I think it would bother me more if I thought he was seeking these interviews out, but I don't think that's the case. They always go looking for Pete this time of year. But I think you're right. It could help him a lot to just leave it at "I was wrong" and be quiet for a while.
