Reds considering logistics of September callups

The one name that figures most in the dilemma is top prospect and speedy center fielder Billy Hamilton, who is not on the 40-man roster. He would have to be added before a promotion.

"We have to find a way to do it without losing people," Jocketty said.

I hadn't looked at the 40 man in months, and I didn't remember Billy isn't even on there. Perhaps a trade to clear some space would be a solution?

Anyway, here is the 40 man as of today:

    # Pitchers
    61 Bronson Arroyo
    34 Homer Bailey
    51 Jonathan Broxton
    54 Aroldis Chapman
    52 Tony Cingrani
    73 Carlos Contreras *
    67 Daniel Corcino *
47 Johnny Cueto Disabled List 15-day DL *
    56 Justin Freeman *
    74 Ismael Guillon *
    60 J.J. Hoover R-R
    55 Mat Latos R-R
    44 Mike Leake R-R
    63 Sam LeCure
    71 Kyle Lotzkar *
    45 Sean Marshall Disabled List 60-day DL ** L-L
40 Nick Masset Disabled List 60-day DL **
    66 Logan Ondrusek
    43 Manny Parra
    46 Curtis Partch *
    76 Josh Ravin *
    31 Alfredo Simon
    65 Pedro Villarreal *
    # Catchers
    29 Ryan Hanigan
    39 Devin Mesoraco
37 Corky Miller Disabled List 15-day DL *
    # Infielders
    2 Zack Cozart
    21 Todd Frazier
    9 Jack Hannahan
    3 Cesar Izturis
    4 Brandon Phillips
    36 Henry Rodriguez *
    50 Neftali Soto *
    19 Joey Votto L-R
    # Outfielders
    32 Jay Bruce
    17 Shin-Soo Choo
    28 Chris Heisey
    48 Ryan Ludwick
    23 Donald Lutz *
    26 Xavier Paul L-R
    15 Derrick Robinson *
    77 Yorman Rodriguez *

Is that 42? 2 guys on the 60 day, so 40+2=42. Yep 42.

There are more interesting arms than position players in the minors that are on the 40 man. Each one of these players has some promise going forward.
    73 Carlos Contreras * - top 10 type
67 Daniel Corcino * - top 10 type, bad year
    56 Justin Freeman * - injured I think?
74 Ismael Guillon * - top 10 type, bad year
71 Kyle Lotzkar * - top 10 type, bad year
46 Curtis Partch * - good velocity, MLB debut this year
    76 Josh Ravin * - good velocity
65 Pedro Villarreal * - decent AAA starter, potential for the MLB bullpen?

While the upside doesn't seem to exist as much on this next list, save for Yorman, there are some useful fill ins in case of injury.
    36 Henry Rodriguez *
    50 Neftali Soto *
    23 Donald Lutz *
    15 Derrick Robinson *
    77 Yorman Rodriguez *

All in all, I would think the Reds could get some return for any of these players if they find a waiver deal.

If not, who goes? Billy is almost certainly coming up.

And are Stephenson and/or Lorenzen going to crash the party as well?

I didn't realize things were so tight.

The short term solution will probably be Cueto to the 60 day DL. He will be at 60 days in another week anyway.

If they are able to activate Cueto at some point, they can make another move then IMO.... most likely involving Corky if our other catchers stay healthy between now and then.

If I had to guess, I'd say they'll either move Cueto to the 60-day DL or cut loose Freeman.

There are a handful of players on the 40-man roster who I wouldn't lose any sleep over if the Reds lost them. Justin Freeman, Kyle Lotzkar, Nick Masset, Josh Ravin, Pedro Villareal, Cesar Izturis.

No need to consider Masset. He's not even on the 40-man right now. As much as I'm not a fan of Izturis he serves a purpose atm and unless we get someone else to replace him as a back-up MI with a solid glove I don't see dropping him as an option.
"He looked like a surfer kid from SoCal," manager Dusty Baker says. "He didn't say much, but you could tell he was cool."

Ravin and Villareal seem like no-brainers to me.

I don't see Villareal being a no-brainer at all. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't bat an eye if they dropped him off the roster, but as things are right now he and Partch seem like locks for being the extra arms in the bullpen down the stretch.

I seriously doubt Masset will ever pitch again for the Reds.

FWIW, a couple of days ago, Walt said in an interview that he wasn't sure that the Reds would be calling up Hamilton in September. Before anyone gets too excited about roster-juggling scenarios, note that there isn't anything in the article linked in the OP that indicates a Hamilton callup is a sure thing.

I am not convinced Walt is done trying to trade for guys. He won't say anything to tip his hand.

Hamilton should be on the 40-man, his ability as a baserunner is useful enough. It also gets him acclimated to the majors a little.

Scenario: 1-game playoff, Ludwick singles, substitute Hamilton for Ludwick, Hamilton steals 2nd, Hamilton steals 3rd, Hamilton steal home. It will work everytime!!!

Izturis should be the easy answer to one, but they won't get rid of him.

His glove is not valuable, BP and Cozart will play all the time down the stretch. They will have plenty of bats on the bench so double switches won't be needed. If for some reason there is an injury they could bring Izturis back, not like anyone else will claim him.

    My opinion.

Adds to 40 man: Marshall from 60 day, Hamilton from AAA, Lorenzen from AA, Duke from AAA.

Subtractions: Cueto to 60 day DL, Freeman DFA, Ravin DFA, Lotzkar DFA.

If they want to add Stephenson, they can DFA H-Rod as well IMO.

Also activated Corky Miller, Curtis Partch, Derrick Robinson

If they want anyone else, Villareal can go too. These guys just aren't guys to fret over.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

The reds have enough players on DL they are flexible to do what they need to.
Just a dude who loves the reds, and some new sneakers.
