Re: Stoops Troops! (UK Football 2013)

I havent been able to post much over the last several weeks so I thought I would since i have a chance right now.
I was thinking 5-7 was extremely possible at the beginning of the season but UK clearly wasnt as ready for that feat as I thought.
I hoped Smith would return to form which he hasnt. Poor accuracy and bad choices have led to bad performances. Whitlow hasnt shown much more either.
The offense's ineffectiveness has led to the defense being on field entirely too much.
I think while the coaching staff may have wanted to redshirt Barker next season, the door is now open for him to come right in or even take a look at Phillips next season if they RS Barker.
With teams like Mizzou improving and the Vandy's holding steady, the road ahead for UK is going to be tough but I believe with decent recruiting classes and guys like Timmons, Kemp and Blue , this team will improve.

I've had the opportunity to see Drew Barker play three times this year. He is definitely a talented kid with a bright future. His stats aren't mind-blowing, but you have to consider he has very little talent around him. He was basically carrying his team, without the benefit of an effective running back or a skilled group of receivers. When Conner's season ended at Anderson County, it would have been a different outcome if Drew had someone like AC's Ross Cox to throw to.

He throws a beautiful deep ball, runs very well for a passing QB, and has a very high football IQ. I do think he's UK's quarterback of the future, but I don't think it happens as a true freshman. He's listed at 6'3", 215 lbs, but he doesn't look like he's 215. Despite his slim appearance, he takes a beating in high school and bounces up every time. His toughness and courage can never be questioned. I'm not sure he's ready to take that kind of beating from SEC D-Lines and LBs though.

If I was making the decision today, I would sit him next year and give him a good shot at taking the reigns as a redshirt Freshman in 2015.

I like Stoops, but he might not have had a say in it, if "repeat violation of team rules" means what it usually means. Nowadays, that sort of thing is almost always handled as a matter of athletic department policy, as opposed to being up to the coach's discretion.

I think people may realize a little more just how frighteningly bare the cupboard was in the Joker era for a team in the SEC - it'll take some work but some positive steps definitely were made, though it may be hard to see with the licks this team took in the UGa and UT games haha. Better times are ahead!
