He had a decent 2012 but was awful last year. I wouldn't be surprised to see him make the roster, but I don't see any great need for him either. Maybe he's insurance in case Hamilton is ridiculously overmatched (which I don't think he'll be).

I think Heisey's a better bet to contribute as a regular centerfielder, though.

Jeff Brantley enunciating Roger Bernadina is one of my favorite impressions ever.

I hope I don't hear it much this year though.
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.

I wonder if Walt jumped The Shark before he signed him. Bernadina's nickname is The Shark.

Thomas Neal and Hernan Iribarren can't get invited to spring training despite hitting over .300 with over .360 OBP's in AAA, but guys who can barely crack .300 OBP are getting invites left and right from the Reds. I just don't get it.

The Reds have agreed to sign outfielder Roger Bernadina to a minor league deal with a Spring Training invite, reports Mark Sheldon of MLB.com (via Twitter). Cincinnati will be able to control the 29-year-old for one additional year if it wishes, as Bernadina has just under five years of service time.

Bernadina, who swings and throws from the left side, has always offered tantalizing athleticism. He seemed to put things together in 2012 with the Nationals. Over 261 plate appearances, Bernadina slashed .291/.372/.405 with 15 stolen bases. With his solid outfield play factored in, Bernadina was worth 1.7 fWAR to the Nats. Last year, however, he took a step back, ultimately losing his roster spot in D.C. and signing on with the Phillies. For 2013, Bernadina ended up with a .181/.250/.295 triple-slash in 250 disappointing plate appearances, and swiped just four bases after notching at least 15 for three successive seasons.

After they were rebuffed last week by Grady Sizemore, it appears that Bernadina will be the protection behind Billy Hamilton in camp.

*The Reds now have 59 players in big league camp for Spring Training.

*Got some uniform numbers for the recently signed players.

    15 Roger Bernadina
    27 Chris Nelson
    7 Ramon Santiago

No Paul or Robinson means the 5th OF spot is wide open.

Sometimes it isn't about stats for minor leaguers. Maybe big league clubs do not need to see these guys get MLB at bats to know they do not have what it takes.

Maybe they get dominated by anyone with a big league fastball and are feasting on bad off speed stuff from guys who will never see the big leagues. Just an example. Scouts are gonna be looking at approach and competition more than numbers. Or maybe their defense is not even close to MLB caliber.

After all these guys know quite a bit about what theyre doing so when "I do not get it" I assume it is something like this. That they are using information that I would never have access to.

Bernandina has had a .373 OBP in AAA

I was under the impression that Schumaker was the 5th outfielder. I thought the bench went something along these lines.

    Pena - Catcher
    Hannahan - Corner infielder
    Santiago - Middle infielder
    Heisey/Schumaker - outfielders.

I suppose that is always subject to change.

On one hand I tell myself its probably just depth to stash in L'Ville. On the other hand though, I'm beginning to wonder if Walt believes that 5 ones = 1 five.

That would be a typical Jocketty bench full of dreck.
