    Cueto/ Marshall Update

    Neither is throwing yet.

**In other injury news, LHP Sean Marshall (left shoulder) and RHP Johnny Cueto (right lat) still have not resumed throwing. Both are continuing strength exercises. A throwing program for both could begin in the next week to 10 days, Lessard said.

I know they don't want to say it, but Cueto is done for the season. IF they even got him throwing again, maybe he could be ready for the playoffs, but that would require him to "rehab" with simulated games. It's too bad.

My question would then be what is the fall back option if another SP goes down?

I imagine the Reds' plan for Cueto is to give him plenty of time to heal and strengthen the muscle. The Reds don't need him right now so why rush him back? The goal is to get him pitching again in early to mid September so he can work out the rust and be full strength and in mid-season form come playoff time.

That was a fun experience.. Thing I am simply amazed with is this teams inability to prepare. Knowing injuries to Ludwick & Cueto in particular. The bullpens depth has proven its worth. To go all season last year using 6 total starters and thinking it could repeat that this season is embarrassing when this team states that its a winning club.. And grant it.. The record proves just that. But you'd think this team would want to build on success and seperate itself from last year and leading 2-0 in the opening series to only find itself out of the playoffs 3 games later. Greg Reynolds is a band aide on a wound that requires stitches IMO. Cueto most likely wont be back based on reports and listening to the games.. Cingrani has been a sheer gem but on the chance of an injury this team might quickly go from playoff team to waiting till 2014. Same goes for the Ludwick situation.. Knowing he wouldn't return until mid August - September and just going with an inconsistent offense and not providing any support has me really questioning what the team wants and what the team says it wants. Not addressing needs such as depth at AAA as far as arm.. Letting Zack Duke walk and trading Galaraga basically hindered the depth at that level. Being linked to Francour and Pence but not getting either knowing the offense could at the minimum use some bench support. Nothing has been done.. What happens when Ludwick comes back and he's not the savior and bats .200-.230 w/ no power? This team needs to take responsibility especially if they are going to want more money for All-Star festivities. I support this team.. But these efforts have been lack there of for the last year and 7 months.

You can't have it both ways being a small market team. They cleaned out their system and increased their payroll to a level most of us never thought we would see in an effort to win now. A #7 starter isn't something you spend money on. No vets want to stay in Louisville because they see all the talent ahead of them. Reynolds had 1 bad inning but he's dominating AAA. He might be decent if needed for a few starts, if another SP goes down the season is probably a lost cause anyway.

I forgot about Galarraga. Better choice than Reynolds to get the spot start, IMO.

Yohan Pino has also been great this past month and could be used for a spot start.

I believe Galarraga was traded to Colorado

I saw him pitch on TV a week or so ago against Syracuse, and he just shut down the Chiefs, pitching a complete-game shutout. Syracuse's announcers said that they thought it was the most dominant pitching performance they had seen all year.

    I agree.

I wonder if we will ever see Marshall pitch again for the Reds. Shoulder injuries can be career ending. There is no fix like Tommy John surgery for some of these shoulder issues.

Corky pitched earlier this year in Louisville. No reason he can't step in and give them a few innings. Hits like a pitcher anyway.
    Where we gonna go?
