Captain Votto: "What's the Sarcasm meter read out on this thing?"
Ensign Baker: "It's beyond anything we've ever seen!"
Captain Votto: "Shields up! Prepare to evacuate!"

Update: I really hope that Razor is the sarcastic type...I *think* he is based on my years of lurking on this board, but I get users mixed up sometimes...

No not exactly. He was playing well behind the bag on a some what slow bouncing ball. That runner on third is off at the crack of the bat. There is no way that Votto would have had a play at the plate, no matter how he charged it. If they were gonna make a play at the plate on a ball hit to first then the Reds should have had him playing in front of the bag.
Position Votto behind the bag is conceding the run on a ball hit to first.

Negative Ghost Rider, the pattern is full
I just watched the replay not long ago on MLB Network highlights. Votto caught the ball 5 feet behind the bag. IMO, he could have caught the ball even with the bag had he been charging harder.
The question is where was Freese while this is going on? No one knows. If he was closer than 15-18 feet to home, he likely scores. If not, there would have been a play. I would think a thrown ball from 80-85 feet beats a runner from 18 feet away every time.
The run was going to score, it's really not worthy of Zapruder-esque analysis.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

I'd rathered Votto charge the ball with his head up actively watching Freese and eliminate any shred of doubt about him scoring. But he didn't and that leaves it open to pixel by pixel analysis and 18 billionn potshots by the unwashed masses. Error of commision vs. error of omission.
I'm sure he feels bad and I'm sure he's embarassed. Learn from your mistake, make this a positive turning point, and just beat the ever luvin' snot out of the Redbirds tonight.

My question is, was Votto playing 5 feet behind the bag because he thought there were 2 out? Isn't it common for the middle infielders to play double play depth and the corner men playing even to the bag in that situation. I can't believe they really wanted to concede a run in that situation leaving runners at 2nd and 3rd putting the go ahead run in scoring position.
