I will say this much, after defending C Trent Rosecrans for nearly 24 hours: If I had to pick between he and BP, I'd choose Brandon Phillips.

I'm not seeking out teams to trade Phillips if I'm Walt...

Because with his age...contract...possible reputation around front offices...I don't think we could get equal value for what he is to the Reds/city/fans.

That said if the Dodgers can't afford Cano, but want to make a name splash for 2B, and come calling...I don't hang up till I hear what they would offer.

I think he and Doc are being sent to London to cover the NFL in London game as they are men of letters and Doc is a Pittsburgh fan.

Depends how you value great defense up the middle and below average hitting. Personally on a team with only two above average hitters coming back (possibly 3 depending on how Ludwick comes back) I'd love to get his contract off the books and use that money to resign Choo or go after someone else who can hit 1-2. With the lack of offense at the major league level and upper minors a defensive specialist with an 8 figure annual salary is not money wisely spent. And at 32 years old OBP low .300s and SLG low .400s I think it's inevitable that he'll be OPSing under .650 at 35-36.

Wait... what? That would just leave us with Fay, Doc, Sheldon, Hal, Marty, Grande and Thom. Welsh can't be a voice of reason by himself!

I also think it's unlikely that he continues to have plus D for the next four years. So if he's OPSing under .650 with bad D, that's a bad contract.

Completely agree. He's still probably the best defensive 2B around but my eyes tell me he's not as good as he was 4 years ago defensively. I don't think he'll be bad within 4 years but i suspect he'll regress to average.

I'd trade Fay in a heartbeat. Erardi should get a LTC. With C Trent, I'm on the fence.

As a 38 year-old with increasingly limited flexibility, I can personally attest to the fact that BP is going to slow down dramatically over the next 4 seasons. Sure, he's a professional athlete, so he's going to stand a better chance than yours truly. But some of it is just unavoidable; it's just part of aging. In some ways, I think BP's O is more likely to stick around throughout the contract than his D. But without his D, he's more replaceable in my opinion.

Forgot about Erardi. Yes, sign him up for a LTC. I like Welsh, too -- especially since he is in a medium that has different demands than does Erardi, and I think he does a darn good job of it. C. Trent is funny and is usually on point about most things.

Stick around implies his offense isn't already gone. His OPS+ is going to be under 100 for his second consective year and he's sporting a .320 career OBP. IMO plate discipline ages well but thats always been a weakness of his. His offense has been based on bat speed which doesn't age nearly as well. I believe he'll be a really poor offensive player at 35-36, a Cozart like .240 AVG/.280 OBP is where I see him going.

Well. That's hopeful. I have to agree, though I hope I'm wrong. Jimmy Rollins might be the true comp on O here, even though he plays a different position.

Erardi is a treasure. If I could write, I'd write like him. He did a game story on a Mason HS girls soccer game last fall that was so far beyond the usual high school game story, it wasn't even funny. He paints a picture and then tells a story with wonderful and vivid language. Ah, here. http://masonbuzz.com/2012/11/12/maso...te-title-game/

I don't think C Trent has quite found his voice yet. He's promising, but he needs to age a bit and lose some of the snarkiness and let the language out. He's a very good writer. Just needs to get a little more comfortable with what he does.

I like Welsh, but the soul of baseball is the writing and the radio. TV is like a bag of potato chips. Writing and radio is like a great steak.

Sorry to hijack, on with the BP trade talk (I'm in the "I'll trade anyone for the right price" camp).
