Except the fact they have been well over .500 all season.

76-61 isn't .500, no matter how many times you repeat it.

And if we accept that, then what? Do we stop watching? Give up entirely on this year, and only discuss what can be done next year? Just simply keep repeating "They're only a .500 team" over and over until the season's over?

I'm seriously asking, not trying to be snarky at all.

Not at all, but I would rather be a team playing well going into the playoffs, ie the Dodgers than one that isn't.

Hate to break the news, but this the lot of being a baseball fan

Some.good, some bad, a lot of turmoil and confusion, and equal does of hope and cynacism for tomorrow.

This is how it's been and will continue to be. So don't feign shock.

I was gonna say, you may think whatever you want about the Reds, but they are factually not a .500 team, if you're bringing facts into this.

But who wouldn't? is there anyone on this board that doesn't wish the Reds were in first place, playing perfect baseball, beating everyone?

I'm asking, what is the purpose of taking the approach of "they're not that good" and "they're a .500 team" and "they have no chance in a wildcard playoff game"?

If you believe those things, then what? Do you keep watching? Do you keep following the rest of the season? Why would you?

I hope the Reds get on a roll too going into the playoffs. But I would hate to peak too soon, and enter the playoffs in a cold spell.

But yeah if the Reds got on a roll the would be great.

Yep, good thing this team expressed a sense of urgency when leaving STL.

For that to be true, they'd have to win 5 games the rest of the way.

Since we're all about trading "facts," I have some!

    Today not withstanding:

    Code:

    1 PIT 79 56 .585 --- 5-5 9-11 16-14
    2 STL 78 57 .578 1.0 6-4 12-8 16-14
    3 CIN 76 60 .559 3.5 5-5 12-8 17-13
    Looks pretty competitive to me.

Also who had Greg Reynolds for best start by a Reds pitcher in Colorado. It stands out just how good he was for the team last night.

And if they win 6 and finish with 82 wins, it would be their first back to back winning seasons since 1999-2000.

IMHO if you keep saying "they're not that good" and "they're a .500 team" and "they have no chance in a wildcard playoff game" it helps with the disappointment and the heartbreak (if it happens). The fall to the depths of despair is not so great.

I don't think anyone on this forum has given up on this team - but seems to be a toll on your emotions to invest in them this year. Of course, it doesn't help that they're in a division with 2 other teams making a run for the post season as well - makes it seem like the Reds are a .500 team in comparison.

It's damn impressive to go 2500 and it's rare anymore to do it all with one team. Think how special Larkin was to us....he never made it.

Thank you. That's a very satisfying, logical answer.
