I would rather lose the division to them than the flippin' Cardinals any day.

Reds pick up a game and a half tonight--1 game vs. the Cardinals, and a half-game vs. the Pirates.

Nice effort against the Red Birds. Three out of four works every time.

I was wrong about bunt free. Cingrani had a bunt hit. And a bunt out.

So the Reds have a slightly above-average third baseman playing great defense. You're right Walt looks at more than a game. And that's why Frazier should not be benched. He's on pace to finish the season nearly a four WAR player.
The league average OPS for third basemen including starters, bench players, substitutes and scrubs is .722. Before tonight Frazier was well below that average, at .706. He improved tonight so he's now about average for that group.

Fangraphs lists 12 third basemen with a qualified number of at bats. The league starters.

Coming into tonight, Frazier was last among them in OPS. He was tied for last among them in OBA. He was next to last among them in BA. He was also next to last in wRC+.

I'm sure his good night tonight helped those numbers, but he's got a long way to go.

There are only nine guys in the majors with more wins above replacement than Frazier. It doesn't make sense why anyone would want to bench a player in the upper third of all players at his position.

.2996, so officially rounded up to .300. It would take one more unsuccessful AB to do it.

Just a really nice game and series. Last night aside, have to love what they did this week. Now need to avoid getting swept--and maybe win the series--with LA followed by some good old fashioned ass-whupping of teams without the same level of motivation and talent.

Forget about just passing STL for the first WC. We need to prove we're better than last year's LDS collapse and taking this division would be the first step in doing that.

Sure it does. It makes sense to look at offense. The team needs more of it. Frazier hasn't provided it.

WAR includes other things, but the Reds need more offense. It will have to come from someplace. I say third base is on the list.

Big agree and case-in-point why sabermetrics shouldn't be used dispositively. They can be useful just like the old-fashioned/traditional metrics. Judgment and qualitative are needed too.

Frazier had a nice night tonight. He'd need to play much more consistently than he has this year to earn and keep a starting spot were I making the decisions. Clearly Dusty sees it differently and I mean that literally (not judgmentally) as I'm not a big Dusty basher.

Major league minimum salary at a premium psosition on a mid-market team saddled with a few bad contracts and a boatload of pitching studs needing LTCs. Frazier is not the problem, although Hanahan (or someone else better) should be providing 30-40 games a year of spot starts to keep Frazier rested. We need another Frazier and Mesoraco to avoid losing the pitching core.

Frazier debate notwithstanding, getting Votto restarted is probably the bigger issue right now. Hopefully the Dodgers and the scrub teams will cure whatever's ailing him. Agree with whoever (broadcast team) said we don't get where we want to go with him not hitting. And, where I want to go is at least LCS if not beyond. Another first round and out would be a huge disappointment.

Mesoraco is OPSing .669. It's great to try and clone good young players. But they have to first become good, which takes time and sometimes doesn't happen at all.

    Best weather ever....playing the Cardinals
Need season tickets to avoid weekday dry spells during school/football season.

Baltimore 17K today, Braves low 20s all week, Arizona 16-18K all week... Even the Yankees and Angels 5-10K below season average all week long. Cubs 20,606 yesterday - I've never seen a Wrigley number that low.

Baseball after Labor Day and before the playoffs just doesn't move the needle much anymore (expanded playoffs diluting playoff race intensity, NFL/college hype, back to school, who knows...

Both teams headed to the playoffs, it was a battle of 2nd and 3rd place teams playing for playoff seeding not for their playoff lives. 100K over 4 days. Was hoping for better, but the Reds haven't exactly been playing pack the walk-up lines and keep the school kids up until 11pm type baseball the last few months.
