Players go through slumps (every single one). Joey Votto is a great player and even in a slump is better in the lineup than the alternative. Hopefully tonight is the indicator that he is getting out of it. I for one, love the fact that Joey acknowledged that he knew he needed to do better. He is a competitor. I hope we all know that Joey was doing everything and anything he could to get out of this slump. I am just happy we are good enough to win when he is off his game.

The Pasadena Star News in Los Angeles had a headline in their sports page today:

"Dodgers lose on slumpy Votto HR".

He's a notoriously analytical and thoughful player with exceptional talent. Whenever a player like him (there aren't many) goes into a prolonged slump, the tomatoes start flying with some saying he "thinks too much" or that he "just needs to simplify getting bat on ball." And that's all aside from the omnipresent BB/OBA debate.

At the end of the day, you either trust in his talent and his mind or you don't. I remember sitting just above 1B last year at GABP for the series with the Nats. Talked with a Reds fan (probably in his 60s) for most of the game. One of his more interesting views was a very thought-through opinion that JV was seriously "overrated." He personally like Frazier's upside much more. On the basis of $ and metrics, that can still be debated but either way.

I trust in Joey Votto. Have never bashed him here or anywhere. I'm really, really glad he's a Red. Give me "slumpy" any day of any week.

How drunk was this guy you were talking to?

Even a non-analytical numbers person would not even think that Frazier has more upside.

It's been down. That's what happens when you slump.

Ha! Literally laughed out loud. To answer your question seriously, the dude in question had maybe had two beers. No more than that for me. More than being soused, he was angry. Some deep-seated, Votto-hating issues I didn't dare probe more lest there be a volcanic eruption.

"Are Votto's best years ahead of him or behind him?" "Now, same question for Frazier." He'd ask questions like those. More than a year ago.

Joey Votto called me over today and wanted the bad news.

“What kind of run am I on?” he asked.

“You’re 0-for-10, 2-for-20, 3-for-34,” I said. “How far to do you want to go back?”

“As far as you’ve got,” he said.

    “You’re hitting .186 since Aug. 10,” I said.

“That’s bad for this time of year — any time of year,” he said.

It went on to say he doesn't have a reason for it and that he feels good at the plate...he's just missing.

He also trashed the notion that he needs a day off...

Not many guys would call a reporter over so they could hear how bad they're doing. Pretty refreshing, actually.
Joey's already my favorite Red, but this makes me like him even more.
