Votto being Votto: Holding Himself Accountable

This is a little snippit from John Fay's post about Joey Votto's slump (hate to use that word...but...). Sorry if there's already a thread about it...if so feel free to delete this one.

Joey Votto called me over today and wanted the bad news.

“What kind of run am I on?” he asked.

“You’re 0-for-10, 2-for-20, 3-for-34,” I said. “How far to do you want to go back?”

“As far as you’ve got,” he said.

    “You’re hitting .186 since Aug. 10,” I said.

“That’s bad for this time of year — any time of year,” he said.

It went on to say he doesn't have a reason for it and that he feels good at the plate...he's just missing.

He also trashed the notion that he needs a day off...

Not many guys would call a reporter over so they could hear how bad they're doing. Pretty refreshing, actually.

I liked the piece as well and liked what Votto had to say. The other thing that struck me was Votto asking Fay for the numbers. The stories about Rose always mentioned how Pete would know his numbers inside and out. Different foci.

Just because he's asking doesn't mean he doesn't know. He could have just wanted to set up the run.

I don't want my super stars to hold themselves accountable when they're slumping.

    I want them to beg.

    I want them to grovel.

I want them to get on their knees and weep for my forgiveness.

Nice to see a serious post from you instead of the normal satire... I agree 100%

I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

He doesn't look like he's jamming to 'Paint It Black'. Speaking of which, Joey has the best walk-up song in the league, IMO. Might be a little dark for some people's tastes, but it's a classic and one of my all-time favs.

Love Joey's 'Paint It Black' but, for walkup music, he ties with two others for me around baseball. The other two:

    1. A positively-awful bench player for Washington, Chad Tracy, is using Darius Rucker's "Wagon Wheel." Ridiculously catchy tune that bangs around in your head after listening. I'll make it easy if you don't know it:

    2. Michael Morse (former WAS, SEA and now Orioles). A-Ha's 'Take on Me." Was a groundbreaking video when it came out in the 80s.

    For your consideration.
