"Yes, Billy Hamilton is eligible for the postseason roster"

I know this has come up in a number of threads. Hopefully this will clear up any confusion on the matter.

This has come up quite a bit, so I want to try to make sure it’s clear — Billy Hamilton is eligible for the Reds postseason roster.

It works like this, MLB rules allow a team to replace a player who is on the disabled list with a player who wasn’t on the 40-man roster before Sept. 1. That spot? Nick Masset.

Masset’s been on the 60-day disabled list and is eligible to come off any time, but he will not. His season is over, his locker is being used by someone else, as is his number (40). Masset is a free agent at the end of the season.

Because he’s on the 60-day DL, the Reds can replace him with anyone who was in the organization before Sept. 1, which Hamilton was. (You could not use Jonathan Broxton’s DL spot, because his 60 days on the DL will not be up by the time the playoffs start.)

Thanks for posting this, klw. I was one who was pushing the question on the "electric" thread since the official MLB rules and at least two other sources weren't totally clear. The Masset spot doesn't just make sense; it's also consistent with what we had hashed out on that other thread.

Will sleep a bit better now since I'm assuming---and really hope it's not a bad assumption---that Dusty will pull this trigger for October.

When I saw Reynolds wearing 40 the other day, I thought 'Isn't somebody else wearing that number?' Of course. Masset.

So, who does Hamilton replace on the playoff roster IF he's kept?

The club won't carry 12 pitchers in the postseason, so the odd man out if Billy is kept will probably be somebody from the bullpen.

Forgot about Marshall and Cueto, also. Going to be interesting decisions.
