The official scorer, after reviewing the replay, seems to agree it was not routine.

It was literally one foot away from him. He chose not to get in front of it.

The game threads often become unreadable when Votto makes an error. No reason to spend five pages dissecting a play that turned out to be irrelevant. Let's move forward.
"In our sundown perambulations of late, through the outer parts of Brooklyn, we have observed several parties of youngsters playing 'base', a certain game of ball. Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our close rooms, the game of ball is glorious"

It was drilled down the line. He had time to move his glove towards the ball. If he had spent his time instead "getting in front of it", he likely wouldn't have had time to also move his glove into position.

Bucs with a tough task tonight against TEX and Yu Darvish. We could move up to the 1st wild card position tonight.

In that case, he would have blocked it off his chest or stomach, picked it up and thrown it to Arroyo covering. As hard as it was hit, he might have even had time to get to first himself.

It doesn't bother me at all for Votto to make an error. It bothers me that he was lazy and didn't get in front of the ball. If he takes one step to his left to get in front of it and then butchers it, that's fine with me. Errors happen. That was a mental error, which are inexcusable to me.

Honest to God, I knew it was Hanigan hitting, I expected it to drop in for a hit.
