I like baseball cards, too. 30-100 looks better than 34-99, I get it. But Jay Bruce has not reached a new milestone in performance here.

But it was his yearly consistency of power hitting, especially 30 HR three years in a row, that finally got me past his maddening week-to-week and month-to-month inconsistency, and pushed me from the anti-Bruce to the pro-Bruce camp.

    Dear Jay,

I'm sorry but I met another player, young guy, round numbers, lots of promise (for now, lord help him if he disappoints) that said I want to thank you for rounding out your numbers we wouldn't want you in a list like this:

    Code:
AT BATS YEAR AB AVG HR RBI
    1 Ron Santo 1963 630 .297 25 99
    2 Eddie Murray 1979 606 .295 25 99
    3 Gil Hodges 1957 579 .299 27 98
    4 Hal Trosky 1940 522 .295 25 93
    5 Bill Nicholson 1940 491 .297 25 98
    T6 Geoff Jenkins 2003 487 .296 28 95
    T6 Josh Hamilton 2011 487 .298 25 94
    8 Kal Daniels 1990 450 .296 27 94
    9 Reggie Smith 1978 447 .295 29 93
    10 Roy Sievers 1960 444 .295 28 93

What is the significance of three years in a row with 30? 2010 was arguably Jay's best offensive season, and he only hit 25 HR. In fact, since hitting around 1000 AB's, he's been a strikingly consistent performer. He's been an asset to the team at this level for about four years now.

I think we should make that judgment about milestones when the season ends. Bruce could add a few homers and quite a few ribbies in ten games, if he's on his game.

True. But what will really move me is if he ups his OPS to .850. That, to me, would be a step forward toward where I'd like to see him go -- not because I dislike where he is now, but because a guy can dream.

It's neither magic nor science -- it's just something that made the light click on for me, "you know, not many guys put up stats like this year after year."

2 years in a row with over 70 extra base hits and plays an awesome RF. He's only 26 and is on a reasonable contract. What's not to like?
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!
