Players get a victory lap, so he wants one, too. Hopefully, it doesn't involve a series of on-field ceremonies. I can't imagine there's going to be any market where the team presents him with parting gifts in a ceremony on the field and he isn't greeted with a shower of boos.

It will sell tickets, I suppose. People will buy tickets to that game just for the opportunity to be a boo-bird.

Nobody's mentioned George Will. How about Doris Kearns Goodwin as the first female commissioner?
Wear gaudy colors, or avoid display. Lay a million eggs or give birth to one. The fittest shall survive, yet the unfit may live. Be like your ancestors or be different. We must repeat!

Im fine with Will but I doubt he would take it.

Goodwin would mandate the Red Sox start every game with a 5 run lead

George is 72 and Doris is 70. If that's the age bracket MLB is looking in, the owners should just hire David Stern as soon as he hangs it up at the end of this NBA season. Stern's record of accomplishment is similar to Bud's.

And to the comment above (not oneupper) who thought that WGN made more Cubs fan than TBS made Braves fans, I'd take that bet.

I love Costas, but the idea that a longtime fan - albeit a very articulate one - is somehow qualified for the job is crazy.

People forget what the commissioner is. He's basically the employee of 30 major league owners. They can fire him anytime they want. The art of being a good commissioner is protecting and marketing the game as effectively as possible while still keeping your job. It's very political. Ask Fay Vincent.

In all probability, I think they'll most likely choose another one of themselves to be commish. No one is more prepared to act in the owners interest than another owner.

Last week, it was announced that Major League Baseball had formed a committee to appoint the league’s next commissioner at the end of Bud Selig’s tenure, which will come to an end next January. Michael S. Schmidt of the New York Times has more on the search, noting that several owners have indicated to him their belief that Selig is strongly in favor of COO Rob Manfred taking the reins when his own time is through.

So in my mind that should disqualify Manfred. (even if he is a wonder dog)
Bud Selig: "I'm the worst commissioner ever"
    Rob Manfred: "Hold my beer"

No. Solely because other people have designs on that designation, Yachtzee.

Also, DKG needs to keep writing books.
There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.

For some reason I can just see it being either LaRussa or Torre. And I don't want either.
