This is going to be a long series.

Some notes from last night around the league....
From Rotoworld w/ Rotoworld comments:
The NHL will be revewing an alleged obscene gesture made by Chicago coach Joel Quenneville during Thursday night's triple-overtime game against the Blues.
Quenneville was upset that a delay of game penalty was not called when a Blues' player shot the puck over the glass during the second overtime period and seemed to grab his crotch after failing to get the call. Stay tuned to see if there will be any disciplinary action levied against Quenneville.

.....The St. Louis Blues' 4-3 win over Chicago was the eighth time in history that Game 1 of a first round series went to triple overtime.
The last seven times, the team that took Game 1 ended up claiming the series. Obviously, that's a small sample size and a very unusual scenario, but it's a neat little factoid for Blues fans.

.....If it wasn't for an unbelievable insipirational play by Colorado defenseman Erik Johnson the Avalanche would be down one game to the Wild.
With time winding down in Thursday's opening game of the playoffs between the Avs and the Wild and with Minnesota leading 4-3 and the Colorado net empty for an extra attacker, Johnson raced back and swatted the puck out of the crease and then crashed into the goalpost saving a sure empty-net goal. The play rallied his teammates, and specifically Paul Stastny, who scored the tying and then the winning goal in overtime.

Such a frustrating game today for the Hawks. Nothing better than playoff hockey though.

That was not a dirty hit. And we get screwed.

Might as well give this to the Blues. The officials are sure trying.

Point of contact to the head..... Backes had long vacated puck...... Seabrook lined the hit up from the distance... i'd say about 3 ways I would characterize that as a dirty hit.
Hawks got what they deserved.... at the same time dissapointing how close they got to getting away with it. It was a great penalty kill effort all game.
We'll just have to disagree. Seabs isn't a dirty player. It's the same hit Orpik put on Toews a few weeks ago and wasn't even penalized for.

I think what happened is that Seabrook expected Backes to play the puck more than he did, and he also didn't expect him to turn the way he did.
I agree, Seabrook is not a dirty player. But at the end of the day, he leveled a guy directly in the head who didn't even have the puck. Backes' head then swiung back and hit the board.. the guy could have been very seriously injured. Seabrook came so far that I think that as he lined up the hit he was expecting to hit Backes from the hide and have a shoulder to shoulder hit, and that it was a play for the puck. Unfortuantely that didn't happen and Seabrook already had his momentum coming his way. I think when Seabrook tells his side, the fact he doesn't have a history, and his "intent" will go some ways to avoid a long suspension.
But regardless, I expect that the ugly result and the direct hit to the head is going to have him sitting out next game. At minimum it was a penalty.... I felt fortunate to get out of the 5-3 situation.
