Told that Leyland informed #Tigers players after end of ALCS that it was time for someone younger to do the job. He is 68.

Is it even worth the time for a phone call or is this in effect his retirement?

    I would assume retirement.

It's time, IMO. They need a change. They really should have won it all last year and/or this year.

    Too bad he's calling it a career (I would assume....he's 68).

I'd love to have him kicking our Reds in the rear end.

I grew up watching Tigers baseball living in Toledo and do not get this sentiment? Leyland is a very laid back manager. He is Dusty Baker.

Put him in the NL and he'd bunt more than DB, way more.

The din from the complaining would be deafening, just ask Jay Bell

Speaking of which. Anyone think that Dusty goes to Detroit?

I actually just said Dusty's name in the "Leyland Stepping Down as Manager" http://www.motownsports.com/forums/d...n-manager.html thread on Motownsports.com and the reaction is hilarious.

I did notice that he switched his lineup in an elimination game with Hunter leading off and they won. Dusty would never do that.

False. He did that one game, and it had nothing to do with sabrmetrics, he did to move Jackson down in the lineup to "get him going". Once Jackson got 3 hits in that game he immediately moved Jackson back to the lead off spot (exactly what Dusty would do) If that were the case why did he immediately revert to batting Cabrera 3rd? This may be true if he ever did it before, but this was literally the first time.

Why does he insist on playing Don Kelly every opportunity he gets? Why did he take Jhonny Peralta out of the game in the 6th inning? Why does he consistently allow his best pitchers to throw 120+ pitches? Max Schzerzer had 17 (!) starts this year where he threw over 107 pitches. Why did he not pitch his closer in the 7th or 8th inning on Saturday? He once gave Edgar Renteria 550 PA's even though he had a .699 OPS because "he was a veteran."

And then he immediately reverted back to the old lineup because he "got Jackson going."

Dusty switched his lineup often this season, even batting Frazier 2nd many times because of his OBP. doesn't mean he is all of a sudden a sabr-minded genius. Dusty and Leyland do stuff like this to "shake things up."

I just looked it up to poke fun at Brian Kenny. Leyland's teams had 1,320 sac bunts for his career.

--His Pittsburgh teams led the league in that stat a couple of times and were in the top half of the league 9 of 11 seasons IIRC.

    --Detroit's AL rank in sac bunts during Leyland's tenure: 2, 12, 9, 2, 7, 3, 3, 6.
