All of us just want the Reds to win. But there's a process that goes into a win.
The process to winning a game is as simple as scoring one more run than their opponent. If that means sacrificing a runner over in every inning and then driving him in then so be it. If it takes the Reds 5 outs to score 5 runs then great. If they hit 9 sac flies I bet they win the game.

Definitely. But tonight they could screw up the entire process and win 1 to 0 on a run from a passed ball third strike two steals and a groundout and I'll be happy.

It's one game. Throw all the odds out the window. Acquiring bases, avoiding outs, OBP, SLG, OPS, xFIP all make sense over 162 games. They all are less than meaningless in a one game playoff.

All they matters is scoring one more run then the Pirates tonight. Smallball works best in the playoffs, especially in a one game playoff.

Then I'd think you'd prefer the things that increase their chances of winning in general would be a guiding philosophy rather than a defacto concession of outs.

Might small ball be a key to victory? Situationally, sure. But to adopt it as the overriding strategy that the Reds "need" to pursue is a poor strategy in general and this is without even considering the irony of Phillips lecturing about pride.

Lots of questions being begged if this isn't satire.

    What is untrue about it?

You need to score one more run that the Pirates?

In small sample sizes anything can dictate the outcome of a game?

    Small ball, y'all!

Game time is 8 hours away and I am ready. I can think of 47 reasons why the Pirates won't win tonight. Here is the biggest reason.

He basically said in one game you throw out all the knowledge we have about run production. That's an absurd claim. You play the percentages situationally.

"Smallball" is a word that covers a fair amount of territory, but whenever someone says "smallball" around these parts, what people actually hear is "bunt." It's been talked about a time or two.

If they play slow-pitch softball, station-to-station on the bases and wait for the three-run homer against Liriano, they may wait themselves right into the offseason.
Agreed. This is a de facto game seven and it has a scratch-and-claw feel to it.

Its a shame that people want to jump on everything Phillips says. He is exactly right in what he is saying. This game will probably come down to the team that can execute the little things.
