I agree that I think he will not be a manager, but isn't he a consultant for the Reds already?

Can we have him mentor Billy?

Plus, even though it's hard to remember because of his youthful appearance (and because it makes us feel old), Joe is 70. The team probably doesn't want to go in the direction of hiring someone who's a full six years older than Dusty.

LOL. I was half kidding when I said Cairo or Rolen would make for good player managers. What I actually meant was that they managed and played the field. Even with their ages, I am sure they can produce better than what our bench did this year.

    From WIKI;

Hatteberg currently serves as a Special Assistant to Baseball Operations for the Oakland Athletics.[10] Starting with the 2012 season, Hatteberg has substituted for Ray Fosse as the Oakland A's color commentator on TV broadcasts for a number of games.[11]

As far as eagerness no clue, never heard anything.

Yes, he works for the A's. I check on his employment status every few months.

I didn't mean that he was eager to manage per se (although I seem to remember him being vocal about it in his playing days?) I meant more eager about baseball in general and not a worn-out, weathered guy. Which is what I expect the Reds to get.

The only starting Free Agent is Ludwick. Not exactly Willie Mcgee. I do not see how Dusty "small ball" has had any impact on moves made by Walt.
    Corey Patterson
    Willy Taveras
    Darnell McDonald
    Derrick Robinson

As long as Dusty is manager, the team will have a speedy CF to bat at the top of the order, and veteran bench guys who know how to handle a bat.

So Derrick Robinson is only one currently on team? How many teams do not have a speedy light hitting player on the bench. Is that not exactly the type of player you want on bench. Who should be on the bench? Young guys who do not know how to handle the bat?

You can blame dusty for how he handles the game if you want. But his fingerprint is not on the roster at all and the roster certainly does not scream of a team playing small ball.

My gut tells me it's going do come down to Price and LaRussa.

    My gut is often wrong.

    Re: Managerial Candidates

Well this thread just became a lot more relevant.

    Bob Nightengale ‏@BNightengale 24m
Tony LaRussa has no interest in returning as manager. the #Reds likely will stay in house w Jim Riiggleman as one of leading candidates.

3 top candidates to succeed Dusty Baker:

    Bryan Price

Price, 51, has been the Reds' pitching coach since October of 2009.
    Jim Riggleman

Riggleman, 60, has been a minor-league manager in the Reds system each of the last two seasons.
    David Bell

Bell, 41, was the Cubs' third base coach last season, but was let go by Chicago along with manager Dale Sveum and the rest of his staff. Bell managed in the Reds' organization for four seasons, managing Louisville in 2012 and Double-A Carolina for three seasons before that

Wish we had that this year.

Choo is not anyone's idea of small ball, or even speedy.

I'd think every NL team's bench aims for a combination of 1-2 guys who are defensive replacements, 1-2 guys who are big bats, a catcher, and a guy who can "handle the bat" ie low strikeout, slap hitter.

Tossing out another name just for fun...

Mark McGwire would have some respect in the clubhouse, tough/fiery guy, knows hitting and has experience as hitting coach... connection to Walt in STL
