LOL. I was half kidding when I said Cairo or Rolen would make for good player managers. What I actually meant was that they managed and played the field. Even with their ages, I am sure they can produce better than what our bench did this year.

I didn't mean that he was eager to manage per se (although I seem to remember him being vocal about it in his playing days?) I meant more eager about baseball in general and not a worn-out, weathered guy. Which is what I expect the Reds to get.

So Derrick Robinson is only one currently on team? How many teams do not have a speedy light hitting player on the bench. Is that not exactly the type of player you want on bench. Who should be on the bench? Young guys who do not know how to handle the bat?
You can blame dusty for how he handles the game if you want. But his fingerprint is not on the roster at all and the roster certainly does not scream of a team playing small ball.

I'm hoping beyond hope that Scott gets the itch to either coach (batting) or manage...Not that he's sitting around...he helps run his camp & actually never sits...But I know one thing...the players would work their butts off, or find the bench...but he still would be very approachable...I don't think he would but a girl can dream...think he would be awesome...Mike Matheny worked for the Cardinals shortly after retiring as a player -- so I humbly submit:

Choo is not anyone's idea of small ball, or even speedy.
I'd think every NL team's bench aims for a combination of 1-2 guys who are defensive replacements, 1-2 guys who are big bats, a catcher, and a guy who can "handle the bat" ie low strikeout, slap hitter.
