    Dusty out as manager

    Just announced on ESPN radio
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

I wonder if he will try to manage somewhere again. He doesn't look all that healthy to me. It was time for a change. He could very well end up in Cooperstown.

Just heard this also on mike&mike. I guess I was initially happy but now I'm kinda nervously wondering who's out there that's going to get the fan base excited? I wasn't a real big dusty fan but had kinda grown used to his style. So I guess the question that begs to be asked is What's /Who's Next ?

I think it's the right move. Now hire Bryan Price, or we lose him.

I'm all for keeping Bryan Price as a pitching coach, and I understand he may have opportunities elsewhere as a manager, but can he be a big league manager? I think you have to be careful hiring him as a manager with the reason solely being losing him as a pitching coach.

    Leo Mazzone comes to mind.

    Re: Dusty out as manager

Bill James once wrote an article (or maybe it was his book on managers which I have at home) about how teams sometimes tend to go from one extreme to the other in selecting managers. A team will fire a manager who was deemed not to be tough enough to hire someone who will bring leadership and discipline to the club, only to fire the new manager a few seasons later for being too tough and out of touch to replace him with a "people person" whom the players like. Back in the late 1970s and in the 1980s George Steinbreenr employed a version of this strategy as he fired and re-hired Billy Martin time and again.

I remember reading in that pitching article that came out on reds.com not long ago that the pitchers like Mack Jenkins a lot as the assistant pitching coach so it could be relatively easy to let him slide into the pitching coach role if Price was hired as manager. I can't find that article right now but it was definitely on the Reds website. Just a thought.

An MLB.com reporter asked what one thing Votto couldn’t do. “I can’t skate or play hockey,” Votto said. “Well, I can skate ... but I can’t stop.”

He did good work for the Reds. I wish they'd played better for him in the postseason.

Now I hope they can keep Price.
