They just fired their manager before the NLDS is even finished. Why would they do that and then pick a manager as a one year solution? We don't have a very large window to compete in, there's no way they punt a year and decide to have a 17 month long manager search.

Fantastic news. Losing in the wild card could have helped this team in the end; afterall had he won and lost in NLDS, he would likely be back.

Next year we have a chance to advance if we can get a baseball-intelligent manager. I'm pumped!

I agree, and I agree w/ everyone saying we need the anti-Dusty. The more strict players manager and the baseball intelligent manager who runs his team by the numbers. We'll see.

I think it goes without saying that the new guy will bring in a new staff. Possible exception if they happen to go with Price (not expecting that) and he wants some of the guys back (Hatcher, Berry?).

I think this is the first of some significant changes for next year. My guess is:

    1) Arroyo gone
    2) Choo gone
    3) Chapman to the starting rotation
    4) One of our current starters is traded for needed offense and/or a closer

Castellini is a business man. At this point he wants results. He may be less concerned about big names now and more concerned about someone he and Walt think can take the team to the next level.

Very important decision, should be interesting.

Change was wise at this point.

Dusty is a good man and will be fine. Likely is forever done as a Manager, and probably that's his preference. I would be shocked if Joe Morgan even wants the Job. I would love to see another Joe in the dougout as manager... Joe Madden, but little chance of that happening.
2014 will not be easy, for any manager.

True... but how much money are they looking to spend for someone who wants a multi-year contract when Dusty is still on the payroll for next year?

    Re: Dusty out as manager

I was always lukewarm on Dusty. I disagreed with a chunk of what he did, but I'm always leery about the unknown coming in. The big question for me is if they go with someone with experience (who's out there that fits this bill), or an inexperenced guy.

I always thought Corky would end up in the dugout when he's done playing, but I'd perfer some seasoning first. The other names that seem to be prevelent like Morgan, Larkin, Rolen, ect. are would not only all be first time managers, but thier first coaching job ever (althought didn't Larkin do something in the World Baseball Classic?).

At any rate, it should make for an interesting off season. I just hope it doesn't drag out, they interview a bunch of guys, and end up having to settle.

Great day for Reds fans! This takes away some of the sting from the final week collapse.

    Re: Dusty out as manager

Although this was a move I wanted and felt the Reds needed to make, I will not celebrate the firing of a good man. Let's not forget this man brought playoff baseball back to Cincinnati for the first time since 1995. He was the first man to lead the Reds to three playoff appearances in four years since Sparky Anderson. He's presided over a remarkable run of regular season success, and with some better luck last year, maybe he has a ring to show for it.

Sometimes in life, changes are needed. Good things come to an end, and sometimes bad things happen to good people. Dusty, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. Here's a toast to the man that brought October back to the Queen City. Good luck and good health going forward my friend.

This makes my day, I did not think they would do it. Now..... get someone who's baseball logic is not stuck in the 1950's. David Bell does not appear to be that guy.
