When Ludwick's contract is over move Ellsbury over to LF with Hamilton in CF & you have 2 speedsters at the top of the order for the likes of Votto/Bruce. Obviously, health is a concern but the thoughts of him & Hamilton on base in front of Votto/Bruce is fun to think about.
Ellsbury is nothing more than another version of Carl Crawford or Jose Reyes.

You have to consider the fact that Ellsbury's value heavily relies on his legs.
When you get older, speed is one of the first things to go.

And look at his career walk rate(6.9%). It's just terrible.

Ellsbury is a vastly overrated player.(especially by WAR)

The only way I give a guy a long deal like that is if he walks a lot, does not rely on speed a lot, can adjust his approach to maximize his ABs as his bat speed slips a bit and plays a position that won't unduly wear down his body. Hmmmmm.....

That way Ludwick becomes a 4th OF for them. Which is a role he would probably thrive in as long as he doesn't call out the fans. 50,000 boos is going to be a lot louder than the 30,000 he got here.
That could definitely work. I think the key to dealing BP is finding a decent second basemen to take his place.

    Re: Trade rumor thread

    Issues for the offseason are:
    1. Choo and leadoff slot
    2. 2nd spot in lineup
    3. cleanup hitter
    4. Homer and pending free agency
    5. Weak bench

Solution is really simple and clear:
    1. Trade Phillips and Broxton to the Dodgers for Kemp
    2. Resign Choo for 4/80
    3. Sign Cano for 7/200
    4. Trade Bailey and Ludwick to Texas in three way with Tampa with Profar to Tampa and Price to the Reds, both Texas and Price get windows to extend. Reds extend Price at 4/80.
    5. Trade Hannahan and Corcino to SF for Sandoval
    6. Sign Grant Balfour and Edward Mujica to fill Chapman and Broxton's role in the pen.
    7. Sign Roy Halladay, Johan Santan, Ted Lilly, and Daisuke Matsuzaka to MiLB contracts be the l6th starter in case issues with health, Cingrani or Chapman arise.
    8. sign Johhny Peralta to give MI bench depth
    9. Sign Carlos Beltran as the 4th outfielder
    10. print money (maybe should be step 1)

    Regulars (8)
    LF Choo
    1B Votto
    2b Cano
    CF Kemp
    RF Bruce
    3B Sandoval
    SS Cozart
    C Mesoraco

    SP(5)
    SP Price
    SP Latos
    SP Cueto
    SP Cingrani
    SP Chapman

    Bench: (5)
    Frazier
    Hanigan
    Peralta
Beltran (with starts in LF vs. Lefties)
    Hamilton

    Bullpen: (7)
    Lecure
    Balfour
    Mujica
    Simon
    Parra
    Hoover
    Marshall

Pretty simple really, I can only think of a couple of impediments.

    Re: Trade rumor thread

I was listening to the radio tonight, I think it was Mark Amazon.

Anyways, he had Jeff Brantley on the phone and they were talking about Price and Phillips.

Brantley was being hypothetical, but he said he would definitely move Brandon Phillips if it brought back something in return. Then he threw out a scenario with the Blue Jays.

He thinks that the Blue Jays would love to have BP and would give up Bautista for him. They need a 2B and he said that a lot of guys from the Montreal Expos (the team that drafted BP) have been keeping tabs on him and have been waiting for him to become available.

I am not sure if what he is saying is true or just adding fluff to his argument, but I think that is one of the few trades I would do with BP. However, I think besides getting a major high profile guy in return for ours, I would be fine if BP stayed. This whole on the market thing could be a tactic by Bob and Walt to keep BP on his toes and understand his place in this organization. He is seeing a hand specialist today.

I know it's not your trade idea but why would Toronto give up Bautista for Phillips?
