Remember when Dusty Baker did that thing? Remember that thing? That was zany.

Burn down the disco. Hang the blessed DJ. Because the music that he constantly plays, it says nothing to me about my life.

My "favorite" was when he stuck with Patterson at lead-off through 2.5 months of BB-free performance.

You mean that year when CP lead off 32 times?

Disagree. Some of us need the catharsis.

Another one of my many favorites was PH Heisey vs. Cain with two men on and no outs down 6-0 in the 5th inning of Game 5 of the 2012 NLDS. Thus saving Xavier Paul (.733 vs. RHP/.365 vs. LHP career OPS splits) for the inevitable match-up against Affeldt.

    That one was special.

Keeping Willie Harris and putting Todd Frazier in AAA to start 2012.

That blows my mind! It shows you what an April 29 to August 7 walk-free stretch (along with a .217 lead-off OBP for the season) can do to the CNS.

Re: what was your favorite zany baker move as manager

There was a game shortly after the All-Star break when the offense was flat and just not hitting. Dusty had Choo and Phillips out of the lineup for the same game. Choo was banged up, so it made sense to rest him. But having Phillips out too really does a number on the lineup.

Dusty's explanation was that this is a thing he does: when one of his guys goes to the All-Star game, he tries to get the player a day off. This is classic Dusty. It's not even old-school or by-the-book, it's just Dusty. And of course, he didn't have to pick the same game.

So, you could roll your eyes and say, "OK Dusty, you have your reasons, but after the game don't scratch your head and say, 'We're just not hitting. We've got to get the bats going.' You've already shown you have different priorities."

Thing is, sometimes it works. We would complain about the lineups, and Izturis would get a couple hits.

But even though baseball is a marathon until it's a sprint, Dusty's rationing of the urgency came back to haunt him.

95 starts for Wily Taveras in 1 or 2 hole in 2009.

Every manager makes head scratching moves. Dusty was no different. But he did win 90+ games for three straight seasons. He took the Reds to certain point and its time for someone else to take them another step forward. I'm not going to pile on and bring up things I thought weren't right. It was time for a change and its time for everyone to move on.

Nothing indicates he is remotely close to a 3, 4, 5 hitter, let alone a 2 hitter. It was a head scratcher from the start. Ironically he did have a very good Wild Card game, but that doesn't excuse the decision.
How'd Ryan do in that Wild Card game?

Pinch hitting Juan Castro for Adam Dunn.

Oh wait, that was Jerry Narron.

Yeah, and it was Josh Hamilton, not Dunn.
