Though with either of those options, someone needs to play 2B. The Reds do not have an in-house candidate. If the Reds come back with a cipher at 2B the team likely will not be as good as it was this season. Phillips' glove is a big factor and he does contribute at the plate. While we all want more from Phillips' bat than we got this season, he's still one of the top five hitters on the team. If you were trying to upgrade the Reds' offense for 2014, Phillips would not be where you'd start.
    I'm not a system player. I am a system.

pfft. Ludwick and Arroyo money. Make the qualifying offer and ship Ludwick out. That's 20 mil right there. Arroyo won't take the deal in all likelihood.

guys are getting expensive sure, but the Reds just drew 2.4 mil, have a new tv deal in place and i'd be willing to bet merchandise is up. Add the buzz, however small or large a new manager being hired creates.

Really am not concerned at all about money here. Like I said, get a manager whose emphasis is "get on base" and Phillips will tailor his game to that.

Also surprised no one has mentioned Henry Rodriguez taking BP's place for a little while.
I'm no scout, but what I keep hearing is that Henry is subpar in pretty much every aspect of the game.

They could trade him, and somebody would probably take the contract, as it's not an onerous contract for most teams in baseball with the increased revenues. But the chances of us unloading his contract AND getting valuable parts in return? Slim to none.

I'm just fine with getting out from under the contract. We can spend that money on resources to make the rest of the team better as a whole. This team is getting way too top heavy, and that's always dangerous.

How about a Brandon Phillips for Matt Kemp deal? Both players need a change of scenery and the Reds would get a centerfielder and righthand power hitter for the middle of the lineup. If Hamilton is ready, then you could shift Kemp to LF and use Ludwick as the fourth outfielder.
If you think small, you'll go nowhere in life.

Interesting how this possibility has become mainstream in the last week or two. Suggesting BP be moved was an invitation for outright board derision a few weeks back.

Agree, 2014 will be tough to replace and require out of organization option(s). However the window to move datdude is now before the Reds get stuck with a 40M pumpkin from 2015-2017.

The royals need a second baseman and are loaded in talent in the minors. If they could make the money work they would be an ideal trade partner.
there's nothing like bowling a 300 game! 13 now and retired.

I don't like the royals and they are a arrogant bunch. During their playoff push it became clear they were pretty full of themselves. He would fit in well there.

Normally I'm a bit apprehensive about entertaining these trade proposals, but this one really does make a lot of sense. The Dodgers have a logjam in the outfield and they've been searching for a second baseman. It would be a good match for both teams. If the Reds re-sign Choo, then they'd have a problem of their own to figure out, but if not, they could move Kemp to left.

Matt Kemp doesn't need a new scenery he needs to be healthy.

That would certainly qualify as all in.

But in terms of salary, that's a pretty big matzo ball hanging out there if Kemp never gets healthy again....

Personally, I want no part of Kemp or Crawford. Ethier maybe, but only if the Reds get more even on salary (like adding Ludwick, but Dodgers have no use for him) or find a good throw in from LA to balance the trade. As much as the Dodgers look like a team that would be a perfect fit for BP and his contract, just don't know if it would fit with this Reds team for 2014 and beyond.

If it's Ethier, Crawford, or Kemp, I take Kemp any day of the week, but none are good deals for the Reds.

Gonna have to give somebody away to get that contract off your hands
Give away.....for example? I think a few dumb teams would gladly see BP's contributions and quite frankly, I don't know how long the chip on the shoulder would last but he might be pretty darn good and exciting to a new club/fan base. He might "improve" a bit offensively with new coaching "Torii Hunter like"

I won't be sad if he goes.
