All that notwithstanding, I always rooted for Paulie too.
Assuming he didn't do 'roids (you're right that I don't know whether he did or not), my thinking is that the '93 expansion would have had more of an effect on the NL than the AL. The former got two new pitching staffs; the latter might have lost the 23rd and 25th players off their rosters. Again, assuming O'Neill was clean, many of the pitchers he faced were not, and meanwhile he had to compete with all the juiced hitters.

I actually think you're onto something that the '93 and 98 expansions played a bigger role in the offensive surge of the 90s than people acknowledge. Everything is blamed on juiced hitters, juiced balls, and juiced ballparks.
". . . acquiring J. Blanton from Oakland for, apparently, Bailey/Cueto, Votto and a lesser prospect. I do it in a second . . . The Reds' equation this year is simple: Make Matt Belisle your #3 starter . . . trade for Blanton, win 85 or more, be in the mix all summer." - Paul Daugherty, Feb. 8, 2008

I always liked O'Neill and I wouldn't say being just a broadcaster isn't an impediment to him being a manager but as Sam Rayburn said to LBJ when talking about JFK's advisers, "They may be just as intelligent as you say. But I'd feel a helluva lot better if just one of them had ever run for sheriff." I'd sure feel better about O'Neill if he had some coaching or minor league managerial experience.

    Re: Paul O'Neill's popularity

O'Neill was red meat for Cincinnati sports fans - good and bad. Somewhat local roots. A guy that always worked his butt off - and, just as importantly, looked like he worked his butt off - and showed frustration with poor results.

I don't know if his, ahem, volcanic personality as a player should be held against him. Many people mellow as they age, and it could well be that he has the temperament necessary.

I just don't see this club as being the right place for a first-time manager. I'm not opposed to bringing in a younger guy that's played the game (Martinez, Matt Williams) and has some coaching experience, but I don't know that you will get a lasso around this clubhouse with a guy stepping directly in from the broadcast booth.

    Re: Paul O'Neill's popularity

I don't think a guy being hard on himself necessarily means he is going to be that hard on others. It might mean that, it might not. Just throwing that out there, I'm intrigued by O'Neill but still prefer Price (with the very limited information I have.)
Because the plain people are able to speak and understand, and even, in many cases, to read and write, it is assumed that they have ideas in their heads, and an appetite for more. This assumption is a folly.

I have no rational reason for thinking this way, but if it isn't Price then I hope it is O'Neill.

Hiring O'Neil as manager makes less sense with each passing day, it's akin to UDF making Brantley president of the company because he endorses the product.

    Manager?

    No.

But as bench coach with duties that include storming out of the dugout to argue blown calls by the umps?

    Yep.

I actually can't bring myself to care.

I'm a little more concerned about the outfield.

    Re: Paul O'Neill's popularity

Far as I can tell Paul O'Neill is an extremely laid back guy except when he's playing a game. Never yelled at teammates. Sort of happy-go-lucky in the booth. All of his anger seems self directed. If anyone's thinking O'Neill will be storming around like a madman at his team (and if that's something you misguidedly want the Reds to get), then I'm confident O'Neill would disappoint you.

Guaranteed he'd try to emulate Joe Torre way more than Lou Piniella.

My wife had quite the thing for O'Neill back in the day.

I told her that Paul was a potential candidate and her eyes lit up.

Better watch her, she'll be buying season tickets before you know it.

as long as she takes me, I don't care if she flashes Paul when he visits the mound.

My wife has a thing for Doug Dascenzo, who used to manage the Padres' AA team here in San Antonio. I read today that he was just named 3B coach for the Braves. If by some miracle, Dascenzo were named manager of the Reds, I strongly suspect we would travel to Ohio more often to see Reds games.

Maybe I should rethink who I want to see as manager?

If Paul ONeil is the answer I don't want to know what the question is.
