    Votto's 10yr extension finally starts in 2014

    Discuss.

2013 was the last year of his original contract (3/$38MM). 2014-2023 is the duration of his most recent extension (10yr/$225MM).

The good news is, he is actually less expensive through 2015 than he was this year. I love Votto as a Red but man, that's a lot of money, and a lot of years.

The deal won't look great for the last couple of years, but I actually expect Votto to age fairly gracefully so long as he remains relatively healthy. I tend to think that guys with elite on base skills do better than guys who bank primarily on power when they reach their mid to late thirties.

I still think the dollars and years were a little too high, and I said as much when the deal was signed. However, I think the team dedicated the money to the right guy, and I couldn't be happier that he's basically a Red for life.

Just think how rough an offseason this would be and how demoralizing last season would be if he was a Free Agent now.

After what he put up with (questioning his approach so much) he would probably be looking to get out of here...

Not unless he learned to pull the ball a little more, when he gets a little older those opposite field shots will stop going over the wall. When he gets a little slower he will stop making contact with the balls he wants to shoot the other way.

You have to adapt as you get older and Joey claims he will not change his approach for any reason

Hard to believe the ten year contract really hasn't even started yet...

Huge overpay as it turned out with the potential for some lean seasons in the out years. I think he'd get 7/140 on the open market. 1B and DH are the only places to put him. Reds should be very concerned based on the post knee injury recovery and regression in defense and baserunning this season. Hoping a full offseason of work and not worrying about the knee will make Votto more confident next season.

That's taken way out of context. If he is on-basing .340 and slugging .400, pretty sure he changes his approach.

He said he won't change his approach in regards to critics saying he should swing at more pitches and expand his zone just to drive in more runs. His ultimate goal is not make an out...and I appreciate that goal. I wish everyone had that mindset.

I think a great comp for Votto is George Brett (Votto walks more and has a bit more power). Brett had a slash line of .298/.376/.484 from age 30 to 39. If Votto can do the same, I'll be quite pleased.

Re: Votto's 10yr extension finally starts in 2014

For what it is worth, if you take Votto as a 6 WAR player in year 1 of the extension, discount that by .5 wins each year and then simply multiply that WAR by $5M, Votto comes out as being projected to be worth $187.5M over the life of the deal. If you use a multiplier of $6M, it comes out to $225M. Go figure.

Now, obviously you have to account for inflation and there's all sorts of accounting you could do related to risk and custom aging curves and so forth. But there at least seems to be a modicum of hope that he'll provide sufficient value.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Re: Votto's 10yr extension finally starts in 2014

After age 37, Brett never OPS'd higher than .746 and he was a physical freak. And he played a premium defensive position until age 33.

Interesting in his 21 year career with the Royals, Brett made a total of $23M dollars...

Barring hyperinflation kicking in, I still don't see a scenario where this contract ends well for the Reds.

Would Votto go Pine Tar nuts on an umpire if he banned his tea and lattes for a week?

Re: Votto's 10yr extension finally starts in 2014

As discussed before, it's highly unlikely that Votto will be worth what he's being paid in the final years of this contract. But that okay.

When you sign a star player to a long term contract in his prime, you do so in order to benefit from his prime years production. During those years, Votto will be well underpaid, and actually saving the Reds money. To get that, the Reds were will willing to accept that they will likely be losing money on the last few years of the contract.

It's really the only way to keep a star player long term.
