Why would Toronto do that trade?

They need help at 2b, LF, and SP. They may want Leake or Chapman instead of Bailey so they have 2 years instead of 1. But Leake is still affordable and Chapman may need to remain in the bullpen. It creates a problem for them at SS, though. Reyes is injury prone and maybe once they've upgraded 3 spots they can settle on a more steady SS.

The Dodgers wish they had Votto to build around for the next few years. But if the Reds are willing to double down, this illustrates how quickly they can become an amazing team with just 10 or 20 million more dollars, depending on who is moved.

    Re: 40 Man Roster - 2014

    Bailey 9 m
    Leake 6 m
    Ludwick 8.5 m
    Phillips 11 m

    total 34.5 m

I don't think Broxton and Marshall can be moved.

But that's a lot of coin to work with if it's moved properly.

And after 2016 a ton of cash would come off the books across the board for the Reds.

You only proposed trading one of the SP. And Ludwick is just as untradeable as the relievers...

You're right. I was just looking at a batch of players that can free payroll up. Revised, I would say Phillips, Chapman, Ludwick for Reyes. Maybe that doesn't get it done, but Chapman is a premium talent, so I think it's closer.

I do not think that they would want to move Reyes. He may be overpaid and injury-proned, but an offensive SS is hard to come by.

I think that the Jays would be more willing to do a trade that involved Bautista. Some of their blogs, forums, and articles suggest that the fans have grown tired of him and want him gone.

I could see a trade with the Jays involving BP and Jose Bautista and others on both sides. Doubtful on Reyes.

The Blue Jays had a payroll of 120 million last year, and they have 110 million in guaranteed contracts for 2014. It's doubtful they'd be able to take on that much payroll.

Just to keep this up to date - the Reds released Corky Miller and Greg Reynolds, both of whom elected free agency. They claimed Pedro Beato, RHP, off waivers and added him to the 40 man roster.

    Re: 40 Man Roster - 2014

Just an update - here's the link again to the spreadsheet for the roster and known salaries at this point: https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?...gw&output=html

We have the addition of Pena and Beato.

Here are some upcoming dates that likely impact the roster as we move to the winter meetings:

    December 2
    Tender deadline

    December 5
Last date to request outright waivers to assign player prior to Rule 5 Draft

    December 9
Last date to outright a player prior to Rule 5 Draft

The roster currently stands at 36 players.

Today is the dealine for adding guys. Roster sits at 37 if you add Pena and Schumaker.

Best candidates, IMO: Barnhart, Rogers, Hayes, Lamarre

Guys that could be dropped, arguably: DRobinson, Soto, HRod, Christiani, Partch

I'd keep DRobinson and Partch on the 40 man if possible. Both are decent depth guys. I wouldn't be scared of losing Lamarre (doubt he ever makes the bigs). Not sure how I'd fill out the rest of the 40, but I think Partch has genuine major league potential and would hate to lose him. I could stomach losing DRob, but I think he's worth a roster slot.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob
