Re: Report: Reds Hire Bryan Price

I keep forgetting the Little Bears are still looking for a fearless leader.

Four of the five current openings are pretty good gigs

Wikipedia lists Price as the current manager so I guess they can skip the press conference...

13 of 15 NL managers hired since late in the 2010 season. No sense keeping a mortgage in this business.

My hope for Price is not that he is some sabermetrics zealot but simply that he is has good baseball knowledge, which seems evident, and uses good sense and judgment in managing the ballclub.

P.S. Arroyo allowed more homers than any other NL pitcher this season.
Except for the guys who were here before Price and the ones who've come from elsewhere and flourished under Price. And if you can't attribute what the team has changed and thrived at to the pitching coach then why have a pitching coach and not a picture of Christy Mathewson hanging in everyone's locker?

Sabermetrics zealot? Yeah, because that's what I was saying.

P.S. Arroyo still pitched well, mainly because he's doing things that allow him to survive his HRs. But I already said that once and you're not likely to pay anymore attention to it the second time around.

Yeah, that's how it works. Pitching coach goes up to pitcher, tells him to pitch better and everything else falls into place.

If Price was a SABR zealot, he would have committed Hari Kari before his first year on Baker's staff was up.

To be honest, I don't care if Price is SABR or Old School, just that he isn't hostile to the other. I think Baker was an Old School zealot, and that was his biggest weakness.

So because Votto improved his OPS, we can conclude Jacoby has a baseball prospectus subscription? Homer Bailey increased his K/BB because Price got his fastball in the mid to high 90's with three good off-speed pitches. Price could've done that without ever once hearing the word FIP.

Your previous post suggested that Arroyo's home run rate has undergone some kind of transformation under Price. While Arroyo was hurt and ill in 2011, generally his home run propensity remains - I don't see the transformation. Yes, his low walk rate helps him and is a wise approach, a point I've made on RedsZone and fully agree with.

But I disagree that Price's success in any way reflects a particular stats focus or a focus on modern stats. He probably just knows a great deal about pitching and how to teach it.

Based on Arroyo's comments, I like the signing, Price seems to be well organized and intelligent. These attributes and good judgment are the main issues for me, not his like or dislike of certain statistics.

It doesn't have to be a black and white issues (non sabr vs sabr). I do agree with M@ statement that Proce is able to look into the numbers and assertain what needs to be done- when you couple that with Arroyo's statement -it becomes clearer that he is able to use what's out there (sabr stuff -pitch fx, etc..). Dusty, btw, was an old school manager slowly using sabr stuff --we are not at the place where a manager is either old school or sabr. Everyone in the game has moved closer to using a stats based approach. The old school is gone --there is no more ols vs new --that war is over.

I just learned that Price IS A LEFTY!

Finally, a manager that should appreciate the southpaw hurler and, presumably, the LHH!

Best man for the job IMO. I'm gonna miss him as pitching coach, but I'm guessing he'll still have significant imput in that capacity anyway, regardless of who they hire.

I have a feeling Price is going to have a much tougher approach in the clubhouse, which is what they need at this point.

I like people that are really good at their jobs. Bryan Price has proven that he has the work ethic/intelligence to be a great pitching coach. Now I'm glad to see if he makes the transition into a great manager.

    Good hire imo
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.
