After all that WLW has said about him, criticizing his approach at the plate repeatedly, saying he's overpaid and blaming the Reds struggles on his lack of RBIs, all despite the insane numbers he puts up, I wouldn't mind if instead of politely declining Votto told the entire radio station to go pound sand.

Nope.
With all the jokes about what Votto is/isn't paid to do, I'm going to make a serious statement: Joey Votto is NOT paid to talk to the media. He has zero obligation to do so. None. No obligation whatsoever. He's paid to play well on the field, not do an interview with a radio station in the off-season, not give a statement. He's paid to play baseball well.

Being good at baseball doesn't mean you have to be good at talking via the media.
That's if you want to call WLW media

I expect that the aftermath of "Phillips on the trading block due to the magazine article" is going to result in a lot less open/honest communication from the players.
I expected all players who spoke to glowingly endorse whatever decision was made. Expect more clichés, etc..
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

You speak as if being an introvert is a character flaw.....like a certain amount of money should make someone whoever people want him to be. Introverts are just as successful as extroverts. It's just not as obvious to some folks who see the world in black and white. And you can no more turn a true introvert to an extravert than you can convert a true lefty to a righty.
The leadership thing comes up with Votto all the time. Fact is, no one knows what kind of leader he is. Personally, i don't care if he is or not. But just because he's not a rah rah guy who throws things and yells at his teammates does not mean he doesn't lead. There are more ways than one to lead. I'm not suggesting he's a strong one. I'm suggesting we don't know. I've been around plenty of quieter, "introverted" leaders. They are often times the most effective ones because they aren't doing it for all to see. It's more impactful that way.

Feel better?
As for "what else are you doing?" I present several possibilities:
Drinking fancy coffee
Buying shirts
Eating poutine
Watching hockey
Sitting in his castle watching his court jester
Hanging out with his family
Spending vast amounts of his contract on Marty Benneman voodoo dolls
Eating dinner with his family
Poking polar bears with a stick
You know...stuff
BTW, I meant to write this yesterday - the timing of this did not surprise me in the least. I figured they intended to get the hiring in around now since there are quite a number of decisions that will need to be made shortly after the Series ends - whether to make offers to Arroyo and/or Choo - who to jettison from the 40 man roster, who to bring on. They've got a lot of work to do over the next couple of weeks to be ready for the remainder of the off-season.
