But my main point being, let's not get hung up on choo or using BP as a salary dump to free up money to sign choo. That'd leave us in quite the bind if we freed up the money then choo signs elsewhere. My whole theory in the offseason is to assume choo will not be back and keep the payroll around the same level in case you can sign him. Use Phillips to acquire player(s) that'd pick up the loss in production by choo. If choo returns, we could make a spot for him. Don't focus your offseasons efforts around one player, you may get burned.

Dave Cameron mentioned this rumor again in his chat today on FanGraphs. He said something along the lines of, "couldn't you just see KC overpaying to get Phillips?"

I would love to get a bullpen arm out of KC. If you want to move Chapman to the rotation. KC has the fireballers to insert back into the assertive backend role. Herrera, Crow, Hochevar, Smith, and Holland are very nice pieces.

You could build something with Phillips for Gordon. I know that Gordon is popular and all, but whatever, this is the day before Halloween, and we can write all sorts of crazy crap on the internet.

Hochevar is a FA after 2014, and will probably be a $5.5-6 million dollar guy. But to get Gordon, and out from under Phillips' contract you may have to take the expensive piece.

Definitely. But looking at it cueto wasn't part of the core, he was hurt most of the year. The staff can do well without him. Wright is worlds better than Frazier, so it's an upgrade. Murphy's peripheral offensive numbers are better than Phillips, so despite the loss in D, the offense is upped. Chapman would be a loss, but it's offset salary, and the closer market is pretty good this year in the FA market. It's probably a bit of an overpay, but I don't think it's as lopsided as it appears at first glance, and would help both teams IMO. Reds get a high OBP right handed bat, and a second basemen that is solid offensively while losing a poor contract in Phillips, a guy who is marginal in Frazier, a number one that IMO has peaked and has an injury history. Losing chapman would hurt, but you have to give to receive. The mets get a closer for the injured Parnell, a starter for the injured Harvey, a major league third basemen to cover the spot, and a huge defensive upgrade at second. In the end the reds would basically keep the same rotation as most of 2013 with Stephenson in the wings, would have a better offense than 2013, and realky the only acquisition that they'd need after that is a closer.

I wasn't even commenting on the equality of the trade. That's just a move that GMs don't make when their jobs are as stable as Jocketty's appears to be at the moment. That's pushing all your chips to the middle of the table, standing up and turning your hat backward. I don't see Walt going with anything remotely that bold

True. That's not walts style at all. Bowden maybe, but Walt tries to keep most of the team intact or deal from positions of depth or prospects blocked by our current stars.

Garbage writing, and another example of why I don't like/respect much of the media, they don't bother to get facts right or will manipulate them to fit their agenda. This writer suggests his contract is what he is complaining about-it was the process of the negotiations and not having a contract he was complaining about, not what he ended up signing for.
