Obviously there's no right answer. Maybe it was a little of both. Taking it to another level, did his numbers decrease because of the injury, regression to - and past - the mean or are his skills deteriorating before our eyes? It happens to all ballplayers. It doesn't appear to have affected Brandon in the field - and that's a good sign because that is usually where you see it first.

I think the Reds aren't going to do a heckuva lot better than Brandon at 2nd for the next few years. It's not exactly like we have a Matt Carpenter ready to take over. He may not have a sexy OBP but is the next guy going to do much better and he's not likely to be as good in the field as Brandon. Perhaps Brandon should serve as a lesson to the front office to not give out those kind of contracts if you think you want to dump them in a year or two.

Regression is naturally gravitating towards your baseline skill level. Phillips started out hot and then took a hard 180 toward sub-replacement level stuff. That looks like nagging injury to me.

I hope we hang onto the guy. I don't think the sky's falling on him yet.

Got no idea where you picked .735 from, but expecting a guy who has been consistently better than .750 to bounce back from .700 is pretty much standard operating procedure.

Upgrade SS, turn Cozart into your utility IF.

Works for me. Cozart as a supersub making 60-70 starts a year would be terrific.

So the year he put up a .776 OPS is a down season, but expecting him to bounce back from .706 is a pipe dream? You've lost me.

I suspect he'd put up a better slashline too. SS every day is a grind.

I'd love to get guys to replace Cozart and Phillips that can do better but I'm not sure who those guys are.

    Exactly

My bad, Choo is one year younger than Phillips. Who's to say we wouldn't be in the same boat in 2 years, with a declining Choo, who has an additional 80 mil left on his deal?

I like that idea. If a substantial upgrade can be made at SS 3b or LF the bench instantly becomes stronger if ludwick Frazier or cozart are not involved in a deal.

Getting clearance from his doctor to give the entire city the middle finger when he's traded later this winter, I imagine.

I don't think a SS upgrade is needed given Cozart's defensive skill level and the occasional pop in his bat AS LONG he never hits higher than 7th in the order and the offensive is otherwise upgraded. If the Reds have a quality bats in the leadoff, a better bat in the two hole and cleanup, Cozart is a fine SS for a 7 or 8 hitter. The biggest offensive problem Cozart has present this year and last was when he was used in the first two spots of the order.

There has been no mention of the injury or appointment from the FO?

I think we should have their input before speculating further.
