Mat Latos is already walking without crutches five days after knee surgery

Mat Latos underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports that the Reds right-hander is already “walking without crutches” or “a noticeable limp.”

At the time of the surgery the Reds said they hoped Latos could resume throwing in around 10 days and so far he’s on schedule. Or as general manager Walt Jocketty put it: “He’ll be fine.”

It was just a minor outpatient surgery...my 54 year old father had the same procedure done a month ago and walked from my car to his living room 45 minutes after it was over without crutches, and was back to work as a maintenance worker 3 weeks later. I don't understand why Latos' injury is such a huge concern for everyone. He has the best people possible taking care of him.

Amazing what watching a rotation mate get paid will do for the ol' motivation.

When you're talking about a pitcher, any surgery is going to give people pause. Plus, we just went through a year with Johnny Cueto's recurring "minor" injury.

You can't really blame people for seeing the glass half-empty (or maybe 10% empty in this case).
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Walking is easy.....my big concern is that it's his plant leg. The tricky meniscus injury usually comes with 'nagging' pain, and I'm worried it might mess up his mechanics.

So, does this mean that they cancelled the amputation? Or is that still on?

I'm not very good at predictions, but I'll say that Latos' amputed leg will get offered 30 million for 3 years.
