Just go ahead and mail the 2014 World Series trophy to Cincinnati after that move.

I looked at his major league numbers. I read everything I could find. I looked at his minor league numbers. All I could come up with is 'this is the best use of a 40 man spot they can find?'

Former #1 pick. Not much else is impressive. But he might be a decent bullpen arm, cheaper than Ondrusek, and probably not much worse.

I understand what you're saying, but then again, we have no idea at the moment what the long-term plans are. As things are right now, the 40 man roster will be a bit fluid. And it could well be that our scouts and Price see something in this guy that they think will be an effective tool going into next year. I know you know this, but not every move has to be sexy.

Seems like the Reds were tied to Beato in a trade rumor awhile back. May just be one of those guys that Walt likes.

Can't say that his stats leave me tingling with excitement.

    From Dec 2010
    http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/met...home-with-mets
Beato has appeared in only two games with the Licey Tigers in winter ball. He’s made two relief outings, but has been working with Guy Conti, the winter-league team’s pitching coach and a longtime Mets minor league instructor, on mechanics and getting the pitching concept straightened out.

“I’ve only seen him throw in the bullpen, But I'm excited about what I saw," Conti said. "I’m not excited about the extraordinary number of pitches. He’s throwing every pitch that can be thrown. But he's got a power arm. I think [Mets pitching coach] Dan Warthen will mold and fix and hopefully he can pitch for us.”

Or maybe Price had him on his shopping list as a pitcher he thought he might be able to fix.

This reminds me of the Alfredo Simon acquisition. They can always waive him if it isn't working out, and if it does work out, you've got something for practically nothing.

Do you underestimate the power of the Price?

    See:
    Parra, Manny
    Simon, Alfredo
    Duke, Zach
For every action there is an equal and opposite criticism.

I don't underestimate Price and I know Walt has found some good arms on the cheap. Just said 'blah' when I looked but I'm not a scout either. What's interesting is the note about him throwing too may pitches. Wasn't that the problem with Parra? And when they streamlined his offerings he took off?

Does Pedro Beato have any option years left?
