Reds Claim Pedro Beato, Outright Greg Reynolds

By Steve Adams [October 31 at 1:47pm CST]

The Reds announced that they have claimed right-hander Pedro Beato off waivers from the Red Sox. In corresponding moves, Cincinnati has outrighted right-hander Greg Reynolds and catcher Corky Miller off the 40-man roster, each of whom has elected free agency.

Beato, 27, was designated for assignment last week when the Red Sox acquired outfielder Alex Castellanos from the Dodgers. Beato pitched 10 innings for Boston this season and allowed four earned runs (five total) on 12 hits and a pair of walks with five strikeouts. In 89 career innings between the Mets and Red Sox, the Dominican hurler has a 4.55 ERA with 5.7 K/9, 3.4 BB/9 and a 45.5 percent ground-ball rate. He's averaged a solid 92.4 mph on his heater in those 89 innings and was up to 93.1 mph with the Sox in 2013.

Claimed off waivers by Cincinnati (Nov. 2013)

Scouting Report: Dominican reliever with a solid pitcher's frame. Fastball sits around 93 mph with decent movement. Also throws a subpar mid-80s slider. Has used a curveball and a changeup in the past, neither of which were terribly impressive. Has struggled with inconsistent control over periods of his career.

Pedro Beato / RHP / setup reliever
Beato is a converted starter and Rule 5 pick from the Orioles. Pedro owns two distinct, and good, fastballs. He throws a sinking 2-seamer in the low-90s and can pump straight 4-seamers up in the strike zone. Beato also spins a sharp slider, biting curve, and changeup. The former 1st round pick was born in the Dominican Republic and grew up in Brooklyn. 7/4/11
    [2-seam fastball(90-93), 4-seam fastball(93-95), curve(77-83), slider(85-88), changeup(84-86)]

I'm coming around to this guy IF Price is going to have some input. He seems exactly the type of guy Bryan Price, the pitching coach could do something with. Bryan Price the manager? We'll see.

Obviously it remains to be seen who they'll select as the next pitching coach, but my guess is they'll be similar in philosophy to Price's and, I'm assuming, someone just as capable of instructing pitchers as Price was. I understand that may be easier said than done. And there's nothing to say that Price won't work some with the pitchers anyway. It all remains to be seen, of course.

Would certainly be worth a phone call.
For every action there is an equal and opposite criticism.
