    2014 season Minor League Transactions

    Cincinnati Reds
Signed: RHP Chad Reineke (re-signed), LHP Trevor Reckling (Bridgeport (Atlantic)), OF Jason Bourgeois (elected free agency from Rays, Oct. 9)
Elected free agency: RHP Greg Reynolds, C Corky Miller
Removed from 40-man: RHP Greg Reynolds, C Corky Miller (both players outrighted to Triple-A)

A former top pitching prospect in the Angels system, lefty Trevor Reckling went to spring training with the White Sox in 2012 but did not make an appearance for the organization prior to his May release. He latched on with Bridgeport of the independent Atlantic League in summer 2013, making 12 starts and going 4-4, 4.95 with 3.4 strikeouts and 4.6 walks per nine innings.

Veteran Jason Bourgeois sports a career .308 average and .355 on-base percentage versus big league lefties, though he might have a hard time cracking a Reds outfield corps that already includes righthanded hitters Ryan Ludwick and Chris Heisey and switch-hitting rookie Billy Hamilton, who is a natural righty hitter.

I don't really care if any of those guys resign. Ashley, Bell, Pino and Frazier maybe just as capable vets to fill a couple spots in Louisville. Hessman just to see if he can add to his HR total but only if they don't have a 1B ready for AAA. No worry over losing any of them, though.

First-round picks from the 2007 draft who aren’t on 40-man rosters qualify for minor league free agency for the first time this offseason. The list includes, in order of selection six years ago, first baseman Matt LaPorta (Indians), reliever Casey Weathers (Cubs), third baseman Kevin Ahrens (Blue Jays), righthander Tim Alderson (Orioles), lefty Nick Schmidt (Rockies) and righty James Simmons (Athletics).

Each of these players, plus 544 others, are no longer bound to their organization by contract renewals—the Uniform Player Contract grants six renewal years—and have no successor contract in place for 2014.

Players are listed alphabetically by position, with closing level in parentheses. The majority—86 percent of free agents—finished on Triple-A (AAA) or Double-A (AA) rosters. Players who spent all of 2013 on the disabled list are denoted with an asterisk (*).

Ugh Gallen...those guys you named have some fugly numbers. Simmons is the only one of even remote interest for me. Quite a dive last year from fairly solid 2012 and 2011 seasons. I wonder if he was injured.

Reds top picks from that year (2007), Mez (1), Frazier (1S), Lotzkar (1S), and Cozart (2).

I would like to land Simmons. I would also pursue LaPorta. LaPorta ISOed .238 last year and his AAA line was drug down to some extent by a .230 BABIP. He could use a change of scenery.

LaPorta simply can't hit Major League breaking balls. Otherwise he'd be an everyday player.

Well, he certainly has had some chances to learn, but with his raw tools, I would be fine with the Reds giving him one more shot (to learn in AAA). He will probably help the Bats win some games and if he does learn how to hit breaking balls, he could be a great hitter.

Very pleased to see Lee Hyde back in the fold. He was remarkable for the last few months of the season. And he's left-handed.

Rey Navarro and Rossmel Perez along with Max Ramirez look like great additions to the Reds organizational depth. Do you think any of them would rank in a top 40 or 50 ranking of Reds prospects?

There are a host of new minor league deals out of Cincinnati, with the Reds inking lefty Lee Hyde, second baseman Rey Navarro, outfielder Mike Wilson, and catchers Rossmel Perez and Max Ramirez. Hyde, a 28-year-old former fourth-round pick, returns to the Cinci organization after a 1.98 ERA campaign in 54 2/3 innings spent mostly in Double-A. Navarro and Perez just played their age-23 seasons at Double-A. Wilson registered a sightly .300/.368/.472 slash in his age-thirty season at Triple-A in the Padres' organization. And Ramirez had a poor season at 28 years of age after putting up two straight better-than-.800 OPS years at the Triple-A level.
