The White Sox have signed Denis Phipps.
Guess I didn't realize he wasn't protected. I was always mildly surprised that the Reds didn't give him more of a look at the big-league level, given his combination of arm, power, and speed. Phipps is a 4-tool guy. Unfortunately the problem with him is he can't do the important one - hit for average. I think he could be 5th outfielder because he can do the other things well enough, but that hitting thing is rather important.

Yeah, Phipps can probably play as a spare outfielder for someone. I hope he gets his shot with the Chisox. Problem here was there are too many guys ahead of him for those reserve roles. I'd think even Felix Perez was ahead of him in terms of coming up if a need arose. Plus Robinson, Paul, Heisey, Hamilton, even LaMarre.

Robinson is a free agent, but yeah, your point is valid that he was down the totem pole pretty far at this point.

Season review – Argenis Diaz
Here is a look back at the Mud Hens’ 2013 team, player by player, focusing on players who spent a majority of the season in Toledo. The “numbers” and “notes” are facts; the “analysis” and “crystal ball” are thoughts and feelings. So here we go …
BY THE NUMBERS: Diaz played in 127 games for the Mud Hens, and he hit .255 with a pair of home runs and 48 RBIs. He had 30 doubles and three triples while scoring 52 runs. In 471 at-bats he struck out 113 times and had 40 walks. Diaz had a .314 on-base percentage and stole four bases.
NOTES AND LEADERS: Diaz had one of the most productive offensive seasons of his career, tying his career high in home runs while posting single-season highs in RBIs and doubles. Diaz was extremely productive when hitting with runners on base (.265) and had an impressive .317 mark when batting with runners in scoring position and two outs. Diaz ranked fifth on the team in RBIs and fifth in runs scored.
ANALYSIS: Diaz is a smooth defender, but his 15 errors at shortstop was fourth-most among IL shortstops this season. Balanced against that are offensive numbers that were off-the-charts good for the native of Venezuela. His versatility, which saw him spend time at second base and third base, also was a plus.
THE CRYSTAL BALL: Diaz will 27 next February, so he may be settling into a role as a Triple-A regular rather than competing for a job in the majors. If he wants to play in the big leagues, he probably will have to sign elsewhere as his path to Detroit has many obstacles. If he’s willing to return as organizational depth in Triple-A, my guess is last season was good enough that Detroit will welcome him back.
With Diaz, Holmberg and Ramirez the Reds have strengthened their AAA backup group considerably.

Minor Moves: Wily Mo Pena, Corky Miller
The Reds Triple-A affiliate announced that they have re-signed catcher Corky Miller. Miller saw 17 games of action for Cincinnati last season but spent the bulk of the year in Louisville where he slashed .200/.295/.333 in 157 PAs.
Remember when Milwaukee traded LaPorta for CC and had a great shot at making the WS, yet all kinds of people said they were mortgaging the future of the organization?
I'm not saying the org has been perfectly run since then, but LaPorta amounted to nothing.
This is why I'm often in favor of trading prospects when you might have a chance to win it all. You never know what prospects will amount to.
