That's true. Sometimes you trade Elvis Andrus, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Neftali Feliz.

I think you'll find ten examples of failed prospects for every scenario like the one you mentioned. Hell, look at the deals Bowden made.
You have to evaluate on a case by case basis. You're right, occasionally those trades do end poorly.
It's also worth noting that Texiera was insanely productive in his year plus with the Braves. Additionally, even though the Braves faltered in those two seasons, here are there results from 2009 forward:
86 wins, 91 wins (playoffs), 89 wins, 94 wins (playoffs), 96 wins (playoffs)
Seems to me like an organization that accurately considered the pros and cons of how expendable their prospects were.
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

The Twins signed right-hander Yohan Pino to a minor league deal, according to the MLB.com transactions page. Pino, who turns 30 on Dec. 26, spent the bulk of last season with the Reds' Triple-A affiliate, posting a 3.26 ERA with 7.9 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in 16 starts and 15 relief appearances.

By Steve Adams [December 19 at 1:31pm CST]

The Orioles have signed outfielder Xavier Paul to a minor league contract with an invite to big league camp in Spring Training, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet. Gotay seems like a pretty solid AAAA 3B. Should help some of the minor league teams win a couple more games.

    Minor Moves: Donald, Mesa
By Aaron Steen [December 28 at 6:21pm CST]
We'll keep track of today's minor moves here:

The Royals announced via press release that they have signed infielder Jason Donald and outfielder Melky Mesa to minor-league contracts. Donald, 29, last appeared in the majors in 2012 with the Indians. In 603 career big-league plate appearances, he's hit .257/.309/.362, spending the majority of his time on defense at the shortstop and second base positions. The 26-year-old Mesa received very brief major-league playing time from 2012-2013 with the Yankees, with whom he's spent his entire career. He owns a 246/.313/.438 triple slash in more than 2,800 minor-league plate appearances.

Reds sign guy named Bobby Keppel.

    https://mobile.twitter.com/MattEddyB...ame=MattEddyBA

Good News: His biggest claim to fame so far is that in his last MLB game, he was the winning pitcher in the 2009 playoff game between the Twins and Tigers.

Bad News: His last MLB game was in 2009.

Been good friends with Keppel's uncle since grad school -- long time. Really hoping he can get healthy and be a candidate to help out the big club in some capacity.

By Charlie Wilmoth [January 11 at 12:59pm CST]
Here are today's minor moves from around baseball.

The Reds have signed pitcher Bobby Keppel to a minor-league deal, Eddy tweets. Keppel, 31, has pitched for the Royals, Rockies and Twins, but he spent the past four season with the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan. Last season, he posted a 6.14 ERA with 3.9 K/9 and 4.9 BB/9 in 36 2/3 innings there.

    Reds To Sign Jeff Francis

By Steve Adams [January 13, 2014 at 3:08pm CST]

The Reds have agreed to a minor league deal with southpaw Jeff Francis, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick (on Twitter). Francis is represented by Frontline Athlete Management. His deal includes an invitation to Major League Spring Training.

This will be Francis' second stint with the Reds, as he also inked a minor league pact with Cincinnati prior to the 2012 season. Francis exercised an opt-out clause in June that year and has spent the past season-and-a-half with the Rockies -- the team that originally selected him with the ninth overall pick in the 2002 draft. In that time, Francis has pitched to a 5.84 ERA with 6.8 K/9, 2.3 BB/9 and a 48.9 percent ground-ball rate.

Francis is the second starter with notable big league experience that the Reds have brought in on a minor league deal this offseason. Cincinnati also inked right-hander Chien-Ming Wang to a minor league contract and invited him to Spring Training.
