I don't mind the signing as a bench player, but why in the world do the Reds keep signing these bench players to multi-year deals? Nobody on the bench should be on more than a 1 year deal (maybe with an option and cheap buy-out).

That's what qualifies him as our scrub that can play more than one position
I think Hannahan can play 2b if needed, Dusty just usually prefered to use Izturus there.

Still, given the fact the Reds owe Hanahan about 2 million next year, I don't think he'll be cut.
I see either BP, Paul, or Heisey being gone as a result of this.

I like this signing though, assuming it didn't break the bank. Could've done much worse, especially if Schmaker can play CF in the GAB.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

Doesn't really make much sense to cut Hannahan for a marginal improvement like this.

Schumaker's ability to play the OF isn't as valuable to the Reds, as we have DRob, Hamilton, and Heisey as depth guys there.
Still obviously early to know where the club's head is at. I definitely prefer Skip as a bench bat to Hannahan, though. And that's not just me basing it off Jack's lackluster season last year in limited opportunities.

Career .285/.244/.372 bat... even in a "down" season last year, put up .263/.332/.332 versus Hannahan's career .232/.316/.349. I don't think he has Hannahan's glove (the one errorpalooza last year notwithstanding), but I don't hate the idea of Schumaker on the team.

We may need a center fielder, second basemen or both here in a few weeks. Skip's a decent depth guy across the board at those positions.

    EDIT:

I would much rather have Skip than Hannahan. Hannahan was a mistake signing, and isn't useful at all off the bench, as he can't hit. Never could. Skip has a career OBP of .344.

Pretty solid, consistent bat who can play several positions. Good backup who won't hurt your lineup if he ends up in too many games.

I do have two major complaints about him, though.

First, the way he spells his last name. My German forebears had the grace to change the spelling of their name to Shoemaker when they came over 250 years ago, but people still constantly try to spell my name the Deutsch way. We don't need people like Skip confusing everyone.

Which brings us to my second issue. Skip. Really? Skip?

Skip Schumaker has 22 career stolen bases in his 9 year career.

Billy Hamilton refers to that as "a decent homestand."

I just dislike bringing in former Cardinals players like Emonds and Schumaker.

He made 1.5 million last year, so I'm guessing this deal isn't for much more. If they need to get rid of him in the second year, that type of money is really bupkus.

Walt drafted him and brought him through the St. Louis farm system, so he is probably very comfortable with having him in the organization. I think this gives the Reds something they didn't have last year, an older experienced player who can play a number of positions coming off the bench. If they need to use him in a double switch he can then play a number of places-- which Hannahan can't.

I also think Walt has a bigger plan and wants to have backups in place for when it takes place.
    Where we gonna go?

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Reds and Skip Schumaker have agreed to a two-year deal, pending a physical.
No word yet on the exact terms involved. Schumaker, who turns 34 in February, batted .263/.332/.332 with two homers and 30 RBI over 125 games with the Dodgers this season while making starts between second base and all three outfield positions. The Reds will likely use him in a similar super-sub role.
