The bench just a got a little better with this signing. Not bad at all.

Though he offers positional flexibility -- he appeared at second base and all three outfield positions this season -- Schumaker does not play any one position particularly well. He posted negative UZR and DRS marks at all four of his positions in 2013 and has registered negative defensive value each season since 2008, according to Fangraphs.
Even if he isn't a gifted defender though, Schumaker will give new Reds manager Bryan Price a versatile piece off his bench that has slashed a respectable .279/.347/.357 against right-handed pitching over the past two seasons.
The Hannahan signing was a mistake. But, I think it was made because there were those in the organization who feared Frazier would have issues with defense at third. Those were obviously not true, as he was pretty damn good on defense.
I think the reason for 2 years for Hannahan is because there were a few teams after him last year. Maybe some team would still want him if the Reds would eat a half million or so.

How's his D? That .715 lifetime OPS looks a lot better with decent D.

Reds to sign free agent Skip Schumaker
by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
FOXSports.com reports that the Reds agreed to sign free agent outfielder/second baseman Skip Schumaker to a two-year deal Monday.
Schumaker is expected to take on the utility role he has previously filled for the Dodgers and Cardinals. In 2013, he hit .263 with two home runs and 30 RBI in 319 at-bats.

He's had some pretty good years hitting RHP and last year he was down a bit. Maybe he'll put up something near .300 from the plate. He probably improves the bench and could save an extra spot for a bench bat role similar to Lutz.
Good post.
Yeah, I'm not losing sleep over the speculative second year given to him (for the reasons you laid out that made sense at the time)... or the second year given to Skip here. Assuming Schumaker's salary is round about the $1.5 million he made last year... If you walk away in 2015 and eat his contract, that's basically a rounding error in today's game.
Nice to know we have real replacement level talent to fall back on, but a bit surprised to see a 2B/OF; still need to add a backup SS though.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
If Skip can conjure a renaissance of his 2007 form, this could be awesome. .333/.358/.458 with positional flexibility? Yes please!

Usual assortment of posts who continue to fail to grasp the concept of a 25 man roster.
Skip has some ability to get on base, and can play multiple positions. If he could actually field well he'd probably be a borderline starting player at one of them.
Fits the bill of a pretty standard bench guy. If they are giving him real money, or forced to use him as a starter, he's obviously a gigantic compromise like most bench players are.
I'll reserve judgement in accordance with the rest of the roser moves, but in a vacuum, this seems like a perfectly reasonable bench option.

Omar Infante is about to get paid very well, turns 32 in a few weeks, and has a career line of: .279/.319/.402
Paying 10's of millions more for the difference between Skip and Omar is a mistake. Save that money for actual difference makers (Bautista, Choo, etc...).
