    Hannigan on the move

Walt wouldn't really trade for Heath Bell would he?

1:32pm: Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic tweets that Heath Bell appears to be involved in the trade, though he's not sure which team would be acquiring the right-hander.

thankfully Heath Bell is going to Tampa

1:48pm: Bell is headed to the Rays, he tells Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona (Twitter link).

1:44pm: Piecoro tweets that left-hander David Holmberg is part of the deal. Rosenthal tweets that the Reds will acquire Holmberg.

1:41pm: Piecoro adds that in order to shed the remainder of Bell's contract, the Diamondbacks are giving up something of value instead of taking on another bad contract (Twitter link).

1:32pm: Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic tweets that Heath Bell appears to be involved in the trade, though he's not sure which team would be acquiring the right-hander.

1:11pm: The Diamondbacks are the third team in the trade, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, though he's not sure of the other players involved yet (Twitter link).

I wish Hannigan the best. Glad Walt was able to get some value out of this deal.

I like the trade... Shed salary, get legitimate young cheap pitching depth for a player no longer in the plans.

Good synopsis. Holmberg may not stick as a starter but his AA peripherals are tolerable. 6.64K/9 2.3 K/BB ratio. He was a fly ball pitcher last year but has been fairly even over his minor league career.

Could be in AAA this year. We'll see from there if 2013 reflects good trending or not. Don't see him contributing much in 2014... but ... maybe 2014. Reds will miss Hanigan's excellent defense...but, his bat, not so much.

If Meso doesn't improve 2014 this will go down as an absolutely terrible trade and the Rays will have gotten a hell of a deal.

I've watched Hanigan for years and he is the smartest player on the team. There is a reason pitchers let him call a game - he knows what he is talking about. Not to mention he was one of the hardest outs on the team. 2013 doesn't count due to injuries

Good move by the Reds. His hitting was awful last season for an aging veteran

Agree on that. On the other hand he still is very good at shutting down the opposing running game and more importantly handling the pitching staff. ANd those two factors will be missed.

Though all the best to Hanny. Thanks for your time as a Red

All good things must come to an end. Interested to see what he could do with a healthy 2014 because I still think he has some in the tank, but it's too much of a gamble for a team on the brink to have a repeat of last year.

I finally have a reason to care (somewhat) about AL baseball.
