I hope it's not true. But I see both sides.

If their only option was a salary dump or low-level prospects, might as well hold onto him

It's difficult to build a lineup on the free agent market. Phillips batting .750 next year would be a big help. It's somewhat unfortunate Cano and Kinsler were on the move this year, as well as a career year out of Infante.

Bowden: Phillips will be traded by end of next week.

Rosenthal: Reds unlikely to trade BP.

At this point, I really don't know what to believe on Phillips.

After all the rumblings this offseason, if Phillips does end up staying put, I just hope his attitude doesn't get a ton worse. We know he's more than willing to talk about disagreements with management in public...

Thinking the same thing. A big reason to trade Phillips was to make room in the long term payroll for Choo. With Ellsbury getting $150M, Choo will likely get close to that, meaning Reds can't afford him even if they trade Phillips. Ego, no need to trade Phillps.

I've said before that this is a huge concern of mine too. Because if this was to send a message to Phillips, and it didn't work, then he will have free reign to say/complain as much as he wants, because his 10/5 kick in after next season.

I never thought the two were connected and still don't. I've also yet to see a single rumor for Phillips that left the Reds in better shape, so I'll be somewhat relieved if this Rosenthal rumor is true.

Reds Unlikely To Trade Brandon Phillips

By Zach Links [December 3 at 10:09pm CST]

The Reds are now unlikely to trade Brandon Phillips, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). The second baseman has been in trade whispers for quite some time, but it now appears that GM Walt Jocketty & Co. will hang on to him despite a lack of available quality options at the position.

Phillips, 32, batted .261/.310/.396 with 18 home runs this season but was involved in a pair of ugly PR incidents: one in which he publicly complained about how the Reds handled his contract negotiations and another in which went on a tirade against a Cincinnati reporter for pointing to his low on-base percentage. He is owed $50MM over the final four years of his six-year, $72.5MM contract.

The Yankees and Royals have both been linked to him this offseason, but it's not known how serious things got for either team. Phillips' 2013 batting line was down from his previous six seasons in Cincinnati where he hit .280/.329/.446.
