I hope the cancer is not the reason he's not returning. Can't see them just letting him go.

Was a bit surprised that Berry was cut loose. Hope they find him a place in the organization.

Interesting in that only 4 of the 9 coaches made it to MLB.

    Bell, Hatcher, Pico and Benavides.

Berry -- who had been the Reds' longest-tenured coach with 15 Major League seasons, including the last 10 as third-base coach -- chose not to return. Last season, he missed most of the first half battling throat cancer.

Jocketty maintained that Berry is still healthy and will remain affiliated with the organization he's worked with for 30 years.

"He'll hopefully still be able to do some things with us," Jocketty said. "We plan, depending on how he feels, to bring him to Spring Training and maybe involve him in things throughout the year. It's whatever he feels capable of doing. I think he felt that he didn't want to work as a full-time coach again for at least a year. He wanted some time off. We all respect him and think very highly of him, so we wanted to keep him in the organization."

Miguel Cairo, who joined the coaching staff while Berry was out, will return to his role as an assistant to Jocketty and the baseball operations department. Cairo will also work as a player development instructor.

"It was the role he was supposed to have last year," Jocketty said. "He wants to learn the business. He'll go into the role he was supposed to have last year before being called into duty when Mark got sick."

I think his job is considered front office so he's not listed, but I think he'll still be around the team.

So they rounded third, but were thrown out at the plate? This is not a good omen.

He apparently has had some run ins with Francona as well, so that should help spice up things around the spring training complex.

Smith, 61, is a 38-year veteran of professional baseball. Before joining Price's staff, he had 14 years’ experience as infield and third base coach for the Seattle Mariners (1996-1999), Texas Rangers (2002-2006), Phillies (2007-08) and Cleveland Indians (2010-2012). Smith also spent time in player development for the Mariners as a manager and infield instructor (1991-1995), was a minor league manager for the San Diego Padres (1984-1989), and from 2001-2002 was the Milwaukee Brewers’ minor league roving infield instructor.

    Jeff freaking Pico

The guy I always revert back to when we face a crappy, stuffless no name rookie who dominates us.

Jeff Pico played parts of 3 seasons for the Cubs. First ever appearance he faced the 1988 Reds and threw a 4 hit shutout, strikeout out 6 and walking zero.....I think 103 pitches.

And in today's news is Robinson Cano.....his Dad Jose was the next of the no name rookies to dominate the Reds.

I'm sorry I don't have a link, but during a coaches corner with Price and the other coaches during Redsfest, Price was asked about the team's hitting (Don Long was not there at the time) and he said they were also going to hire an assistant hitting coach. Though he didn't name anyone yet.

I'm going to resurrect this thread to add in news stories or past history of some of the new staff. I went looking for on on Don Long to see what we could learn about his philosophy and how that might impact the club as it presently is comprised.

Here's a piece from his hometown newspaper written when he wasn't retained by the Pirates.

Feel free to add in more about the new members of the coaching staff.
