5 exciting things about the Reds

I know there are holes and question marks, but how's this for pure excitement:

    1. Fastest pitcher in the history of the game.

    2. Fastest runner in the history of the game.

    3. Pitcher who has thrown two no-hitters already.

    4. Three No. 1 starters.

    5. MVP-caliber first baseman.

I also feel excited about 1-4 of your list. #5 not as much...votto doesn't seem very exciting to me right now. His apprehension at the plate and on defense doesn't seem very mvpish. Hope he rights the ship.

There is indeed quite a bit to be excited about with this year's team, but we really need to pray for is perfection. There are a lot of question marks and not a lot of positional depth.

Big seasons are going to needed from the entire rotation, Bruce and Votto with some help from Billy, Ludwick, Mez, Cozart and Frazier. Avoid too many injuries and they might be able to do something special this season.

Do you realize he was second in the National League in wRC+ last year, the most important performance metric in baseball? His ship doesn't need to be righted, his ship his sailing straight and true at a very high speed.

Votto has rated 155 or higher in wRC+ every year since 2009. His 178 in 2012 was actually higher than the 172 from his MVP year of 2010. His career wRC+ of 156 is the highest in the history of the Reds franchise, better than Morgan, Bench, Rose, Perez, Robinson, Davis, Larkin, Foster, Kluszewski, Roush, Dunn, Griffey and all the rest.

Joey Votto is by far the best Reds player you are ever likely to see in your lifetime. Be excited!

Just once, I'd like to see Votto run full speed to first on a walk and barrel down the first baseman, starting a brawl, and forcing a series of ESPN segments about how he has singlehandedly resurrected the grit and passion in MLB.

I think he can be, but he has about 10 more years of playing until he can be called that. Those numbers can decrease.

Signs I am drinking the Hamilton kool-aid early in spring...disappointed when I tuned into the spring game yesterday that he wasn't in the line-up.

I don't understand how anyone can be disappointed with Votto. Seriously.

Good list BCubb. It wasn't so long ago Reds fans had basically nothing to look forward to. This is a good team. How good is the thing we don't know yet. I'm optimistic they can be in the race all year and be at least a wild card again.

A lot of people seem to be hyper-sensitive to any criticism of Votto. He knows he didn't play to his full capabilities last year and so do a lot of others who watched. I like it that he knows it and has prepared himself to take it back to the level he expects of himself. The knee should be fully healed and I fully expect a great season from the Reds first sacker.

Sundeck shared a photo on Facebook of a 1943 Bloomington IN newspaper article about the Reds holding spring training there where they referred to Frank McCormick as "1st baseman deluxe" - a moniker I suggested we should begin using for Joey.

Votto's low RBI total and high walk total point to one thing. They were pitching around him last year! Obnoxious fans who don 't see the obvious.
