Winter Meetings Thread -- Deals and Rumors

Thought it might help things to have a separate thread devoted to deals and rumors coming from the Winter Meetings. Not limited to Reds.

But hopefully including some good Reds deals or, at least, rumors.

I know there is a general off-season deals thread, but just thought it might help if there was a special thread for this week's activities.

Numerous reports state that Walt will be pretty active this week in discussions. Granted, that doesn't mean something will get done, but I bet he'll lay the groundwork for a big(ger) trade like he has with Latos, Marshall, et al.

Ellsbury Contract Is A Guidepost For Shin-Soo Choo

By Edward Creech [December 8 at 5:50pm CST]

A club in on Shin-Soo Choo tells Joel Sherman of the New York Post the seven-year, $153MM contract Jacoby Ellsbury agreed to with the Yankees is being used as the guidepost in their negotiations (Twitter link). The club expects the final number to be somewhere between Ellsbury's deal and Jayson Werth's seven-year, $126MM pact with the Nationals. All three players are represented by Scott Boras, per MLBTR's Agency Database.

Several teams have been linked to Choo with varying degress of interest including the Rangers, Mariners, Tigers, Reds, Giants, Astros, and Yankees (before coming to terms with Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran). MLBTR's Tim Dierkes predicted a six-year, $100MM contract for Choo, but the frenzied free agent spending spree this offseason makes that estimate seem quite low. Choo is the highest ranked free agent remaining on MLBTR's 2014 Top 50 Free Agents list.

Aroldis Chapman for Austin Jackson - get it done, Walt.

Sure that'd be great, but why would Detroit consider this after giving big money to Joe Nathan?

Because the bullpen was that bad last year - 2 headed monster of Nathan and Chapman would be insane.

Tigers looking to add an outfielder according to all reports. Not subtract an outfielder.

I guess Chapman would double in CF.

And Detroit is smart wouldn't they prefer a failed starter?

That's why Chapman is a good fit.

Also, They got their wish as Nathan is a failed starter. He started 29 games in his first 2 years for the Giants.

You are right though, Detroit is smart - they would never trade a major league asset for a closer, which is why Chapman is now not nearly as valuable as he once was.

I don't like that deal from our side. If we acquire Jackson, where does Hamilton fit? Plus I think RZ generally undervalues Chapman, in any role.

Man, it's amazing to me how much people have soured on Chapman just because they want him to start.

So let's see. Nathan hasn't started an mlb game in thirteen years. He has been a closer for nine years.

Tigers could have gone for some medium starter and converted him. Or gone to the scrap heap.

No, they went for an all star closer and at age 39 still think his closing ability and experience is good enough for $20 million over two years. They are paying him in 2014 more than double what Chapman is projected to earn.

Sounds like they value experienced, able closers, those Tigers.
